“I told you before. I could only give you that one night, Finn,” she whimpers.

Electricity sizzles between us as she leans toward me as if she’s being pulled by an invisible string in my direction. I scan her face, trying to commit every detail to memory: the color of her eyes, the way a few strands of her hair fall into her face. But neither of us makes a move. It’s as if we’re in our own world, and nothing else exists but the two of us.

“But plans change,” I grunt, brushing my thumb across her bottom lip as I lean forward, my eyes focused on hers. “I’m going to kiss you now.”

The need to claim her lips is almost overwhelming as I lean forward and brush my lips against hers. Electricity zips through my body as an unknown force pulls us closer together.

“This is a bad idea,” she mumbles against my mouth before nibbling on my bottom lip and running her tongue along it, begging for entrance.

“It’s all I’ve ever wanted.” I groan before gripping the back of her neck and crushing our lips together.

She gasps in surprise as I shove my tongue into her mouth, tasting her sweetness. Every nerve feels like it’s on fire as a sense of completeness settles over me, something I’ve never felt for another person in my life. Something in the universe is telling me to hold on to this girl and never let her go.

Someone clears their throat loudly, causing us to break apart with a gasp.

“Sorry, but I need help changing out the keg,” Nolan says sheepishly before turning and heading back into the bar.

“I can’t do this, Finn,” Marissa whispers softly, brushing her fingers along her lips. “I promised you one night. That’s all I can give you right now.”

“I know you can feel the pull between us, Marissa. I also know you’re scared shitless, but so am I.” I rest my forehead against hers and clench my eyes shut tightly.

Marissa only shakes her head before taking a step back and putting some much-needed distance between the two of us. “I have to go.”

Every muscle in my body yearns to wrap her in my arms and never let her go, but I stop myself.

“Goodbye, Marissa.”

“Goodbye, Finn,” she whispers, something flashing in her eyes before she turns and hurries toward the sheriff’s department SUV, climbs in, and peels out of the parking lot without a backward glance. Once the vehicle is out of sight, I head back inside the bar to help Nolan.

“I thought I was going to have to spray you two with the hose,” Nolan says the minute I step into the bar, causing me to chuckle darkly.

“I wish, but I have a feeling I’d only scare her even more,” I respond, striding past him toward the storeroom where the kegs are being kept.

Every cell in my body yearns to claim Marissa as my own. I need her in a way that I haven’t needed anyone in years. But first, I have to convince her I’m worthy of the honor of calling her mine.

CHAPTERTHIRTEEN

MARISSA

“Is it always so quiet around here?”

I jump slightly in my seat at the sound of Dolores’s voice as she comes strolling through the front door.

“You mean besides my sister running out of gas on the side of the road when she was running away from her cheating fiancé?” I laugh, dropping my feet to the floor and getting them out of her way.

“That’s what happened?” I nod my head, barely containing my laughter at the look on her face. “Damn, I miss everything good,” she huffs as she strides around her desk, taking the seat next to me.

Thankfully, working the overnight shift last night wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, besides having to deal with my sister and Colt. I hid in my office for the rest of the evening after running out of Tallywackers with my tail between my legs. I wasn’t ready to see Finn again so quickly, but if I’m being honest with myself, I don’t regret it. It was nice catching up with my sister and watching her squirm as Colt finally made his move. My mother called a few times right after I got back from the bar, but I ignored her. I know I should probably answer, but I’m a terrible liar. I don’t know how she does it, but whenever I even think about lying to her, she knows immediately. She always tries to sell me some nonsense about how moms know these things, but I’m really bad at it. Either way, I’m going to pay for not answering the phone, but that’s future me’s problem, especially after she finds out my sister is in town and I didn’t tell her.

“What are you doing here so early?” I question as she stuffs her bag beneath the desk and begins turning on all her computers.

I have no idea what any of these monitors and computers do, but she does. Dolores runs this entire station like a well-oiled machine, making sure that Colt, Waylen, and I have everything we need. We’d be lost without her.

“Colt sent me a text last night, asking me to come and man the phones while you’re at church today because he wasn’t feeling well.”

“Oh, yeah, he isn’t feeling well at all. He has a case of the Suttons.” I raise my eyebrows for full effect.

It takes a few minutes, but Dolores catches on. “Oh, my god! I’m so happy for them.”
