“The name is Maxwell.” He scoffs. “And I’m standing right here.”

“We know.” I flash him a fake smile before turning my attention back to Dolores. “Make sure to call his cell and the house phone.”

She nods her head at me before disappearing back into the station. I unlock my phone and dial Sutton’s number just to be thorough. When she doesn’t answer, I hang up and dial again.

The last thing I want to do is walk in on the two of them doing the deed because that would be very awkward, especially because I have every intention of bringing her soon-to-be ex-fiancé there with me.

After dialing Sutton’s number a third and fourth time with no response, I give up and shoot off a text to Colt. I can call him once I have Sutton’s car to let him know we’re on our way, because I have a feeling she might need to make a quick getaway. “I have to swing by the garage to grab Sutton’s car, but then you can follow me to where she’s staying.”

“Why doesn’t she have her car with her?”

I don’t bother responding to his asinine question as I dial the number to Empire Auto Garage, waiting patiently for Jackson to pick up the phone. “Let me just make a call to the auto garage, and then if you don’t mind giving me a ride over, I can take you to Sutton.”

“Fine, but I don’t want your boots in the car. Getting mud and grime out of the carpets is expensive.”

“You know what? How about I just ask them to bring the car here?” I say through clenched teeth before spinning on my heels and heading a few feet away as Jackson answers the phone.

“Empire Auto Garage, Jax speaking.”

“Jax, it’s Marissa. I need my sister’s car; please tell me it’s done,” I plead through the phone, causing him to chuckle.

“Yeah, it’s done. Just need to fill the gas tank. Tell her to be more careful next time or it could cause very expensive damage to the engine.”

“Will do, but I need one more favor. Can you drive it over to the station?”

“And be late for church? No.”

“You won’t be late. I’ll have Dolores drive you back to the garage as soon as you get here.” I sigh, eyeing Maxwell standing by his car.

“What’d going on—” he begins, but I immediately cut him off, not wanting to be late for service myself.

“Not now, Jax.”

“Fine. I can take a hint; I’ll be there in a couple of minutes.” I quickly shove my phone into my pocket before coming to a stop in front of Dolores.

“What’s going on out here?” she questions, her eyes flicking between me and my sister’s douchebag soon-to-be ex-fiancé.

“You know how you asked what happened with Sutton’s fiancé?” She nods her head. “Well, I guess she forgot to make a phone call.”

“I don’t know how she was planning on marrying him instead of being with Colt,” Her eyes narrow as she tilts her head to the side, examining the man. “Where the hell did your sister find this clown?”

“I’ve been asking myself the same question for years.” I chuckle, clipping my weapon back into the holster. “But one thing I know, he better not make me late for church,” I mumble, sending up a silent prayer of thanks for one more distraction because I needed something to focus on besides Finn Buckley.

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

MARISSA

“Your lunch is here,” Dolores sings as she comes strolling into my office, a bright smile plastered on her face.

“I really wish he’d stop doing this,” I mumble, clearing off a spot on my desk and pulling out a set of plastic silverware.

“And deprive me of the chance to give you a hard time about making this man beg for your attention? Now, why would he do that?”

“You are obviously team Finn all the way.”

“So is almost every other woman in this town, Marissa.” Dolores giggles as she closes the door behind her. “If you don’t snatch him up soon, someone else will, and where will that leave you?”

“Happy,” I respond, knowing damn well I’m lying through my teeth.
