“Have it your way. Let me have your phone.” My body moves on autopilot, reaching into my pocket and handing him my phone. He hits a few buttons before I hear a soft chime from nearby. “Now you can’t ignore me anymore.” He flashes me another wicked smile before wrapping his arms around me and pulling me toward him. “If you don’t stop looking at me like that, you won’t make it to work.”

He takes a step back and winks at me before striding out of the room toward the door. “Come on, I’ll walk you to your car.”

I bite down hard on my bottom lip to stop the moan bubbling in my throat from escaping. I clench my eyes shut as my chin drops to my chest. “Lord, give me strength.”

“You coming?” he shouts from the other room, and I scurry after him toward the door.

I need space and time to think and get my libido back in check because if things keep going the way they are now, I’ll be in very real danger of losing my heart for a second time.

CHAPTEREIGHTEEN

MARISSA

“Look what the cat dragged in.” I jump as I turn to see Peyton sitting at my kitchen table, sipping coffee. I was hoping to avoid this conversation for a few days, or at least until after I’d had a few hours of sleep.

“Is there any chance this could wait till I get more sleep?” I ask, as if I don’t already know her answer.

“You’re kidding, right?” She slips off the barstool. “I brought coffee and cinnamon buns. Besides, your mom said you were acting strange after she told you about Campbell. She asked me to stop by this morning to check on you. You go shower. I’ll wait.”

“I’m regretting ever introducing you to my mother. But if you must know, I had sex,” I tell her, smiling sweetly, and pull out the chair across from her. “Are the cinnamon buns in that bag because I’m starving?”

I’d be lying if I said my heart doesn’t flutter with just a hint of his smile or the idea that I could wake up next to him every morning, wrapped in his arms, feeling safe and protected from the outside world. But I can’t get ahead of things. I need to take things one step at a time.

“Wait… how is that news? You have a lot of sex, so much that I get jealous. So please explain to me how this is big news.”

I love my best friend, but sometimes I forget how direct she can be. If she wants to know something, she asks. No matter where we may be or who else is around. She wants to know immediately, but this is one secret I plan on keeping for as long as humanly possible.

“Fair enough, but I had sex with someone who I may want for more than one night.” I slide my thumb into my mouth and begin nibbling on the tip.

“Now I’m intrigued. Not only did you have mind-blowing sex last night, but you’re trying to keep it from me. Unless you went for another round with the mystery man from your weekend in Chattanooga over a month ago.” Peyton snatches her cup of coffee off the table and takes a healthy pull.

I refused to share any information with her about the amazing night Finn and I spent together in Chattanooga, but not for lack of trying. She begged and pleaded with me for days, but when she realized I wasn’t going to budge, she let it slide. However, I have a feeling it was more so because she was more intrigued by Finn’s sudden interest in me. Not that it was really all that sudden. I know I have to tell her at some point, but right now, I want to keep it to myself. I have no idea how things are going to play out with him, and the last thing I need is someone else meddling in my business. My mother does that enough to last a lifetime.

“Now the more important question is, why are you here and not still in bed with that hot hunk of man meat?”

“Because I have to be at the station by noon to start my shift.” I glance at my watch and notice it’s only a little after eight a.m. “If we would’ve gone another round, I don’t think we’d have come up for air before dinnertime.”

Once again, all rational thought exits my brain, replaced by a random thought of Finn. This shit is really getting old.It was fucking sex.I mean,I love sex as much as the next person. It’s a basic human need. I’m not ashamed of that fact, but there was something about having sex with Finn that I can’t get out of my mind. It’s like I’ve become dickmatized or something.

“Okay, it’s official. I hate you,” Peyton huffs, placing her coffee back on the table and leaning back in the chair.

“You aren’t allowed to hate me. It’s in the best friend rules,” I respond, grabbing the second cup of coffee off the table to take a sip. The warm liquid travels down my throat as I hum in pleasure. “But could you at least tell me why you’re feeling so hostile towards me this morning?”

“Here you are, having mind-blowing, amazing sex with a man that can melt your icy heart, and I killed my vibrator yesterday. You’re one lucky bitch.”

“I wouldn’t go that far. He’ll tire of me soon, just like—”

“Don’t you dare bring up that asshole of an ex during this conversation,” she growls, pushing back from the table and dragging her chair beside me. “I don’t want to hear that nonsense coming out of your mouth again. He’s back in town. So what? He no longer controls your life. Don’t let him continue to have this power over you.”

“What would I do without you?” I wrap my arm around her shoulder, pulling her to my side.

Peyton Atkins is my opposite, but I wouldn’t trade her for the world. At first glance, you’d never believe the two of us were like sisters, but we complete each other. I trust her with my life, my deepest secrets, but I’m still hesitant to tell her this one.

“You’d live.” Peyton plants a sloppy kiss on my cheek before reaching into her bag and handing me a box with one of her infamous cinnamon rolls in it. “With that out of the way, tell me more about the man that put that smile on your face, or I’m going to tell your mom what you were really doing last night.”

“First off, I’m not the one who lied to her. You did. Second, I have to know what you told her first.”

“I told her that you got drunk at Tallywackers, your phone died, and I brought you home with me. And we both know she likes me better. It’d be your fault I had to tell her the lie in the first place.”
