“You’re probably right.”

It’s not a complete lie either way. There’s a pretty good chance that Peyton would’ve been at the bar last night. My mom doesn’t need to know that she doesn’t go out during the week because she opens the bakery every morning at 5:00 a.m. But this could be risky.

“Thanks for the heads-up. I wouldn’t put it past my mom to ask me just to make sure our stories line up.”

“This isn’t her first rodeo. Since you have to go to the station, she may even ask Dolores or Colt, too.” Peyton giggles, taking a healthy pull from her coffee cup. “But I’m your best friend. It’s my job to lie for you when it’s deemed necessary.”

It’s probably not the best idea, but this is what Peyton signed up for when she agreed to be my best friend. I never have to ask her permission to put her into my lie. Either one of us just knows that we need to cover each other’s ass the moment anyone brings up questions. And then we immediately report what was said to the other to make sure the story is believable. As long as you can get others to believe the lie, there’s hope that everything will blow over quickly.

“Now, tell me what happened, or you’re gonna have some explaining to do.”

“You’ll be in trouble, too, because you lied to her.”

“I’ll just tell her you made me do it.”

Fuck, she has me there.Do I want to get into this with her right now? No, but if I don’t tell her something, she won’t let it go. She’s like a shark who smells blood in the water. She won’t rest until she gets the information she’s searching for.

“I’m waiting,” she huffs.

I don’t want to tell her any specifics about Finn. I can’t stop the shiver that runs through my body. Last night with Finn was nothing more than sex. An itch I needed to scratch. There was nothing special about the way it felt when he touched me. Like I was cherished and, dare I say, loved. Nope, nothing at all. I’m not going to even think about how he took care of me this morning instead of rushing me out the door. He was just being nice. I’m sure he reacts that way to all the women he sleeps with.

Not about to go there again.

I take a deep breath, willing my emotions to go back to being locked behind the wall I built around my heart years ago. I’m well acquainted with how men make you believe that you are their everything and how quickly they can change their minds. This thing with Finn can never be anything more than sex, especially if I’m reacting to him like this.

“Hello… Earth to Marissa?” Peyton waves her hand in front of my face to get my attention. “Bless it. That dreamy look on your face says it all.”

“It was no one special. I just picked up someone at the bar, and my phone died. I was upset when I left my parents’ house last night, so my mom just wanted to make sure I was all right.”

Finn’s smoldering green eyes immediately pop back into my mind. That was fun while it lasted. I managed not to think about what Finn did to my body for a whole ten minutes while we were having this conversation, but now, images of the wickedly delicious things he did come flooding back to me. Moisture pools between my legs as I remember what it felt like to have his muscular arms wrapped around me as he pounded into my pussy from behind or what it would felt like as the soft stubble on his face rubbed against the inside of my legs while he fucked my lower lips with his tongue.

What in God’s name is happening to me?

“Just some random hookup doesn’t put that kind of smile on your face. I call bullshit. I want to know details about Mr. Perfect.”

“He isn’t perfect, not by a long shot.”

“Maybe not, but he’s pretty close to it if he has your attention enough that you don’t want to tell me about him. Give me details.”

I pop open the lid; the smell of sugar and cinnamon causes my stomach to growl loudly.

“I really hate repeating myself,” Peyton huffs, grabbing the box with the delicious cinnamon bun away from me. “I’m holding this hostage until you answer some of my questions. The main one being, who is this mystery man that thawed my best friend’s heart?”

“Someone who lives in Magnolia,” I respond, not giving her any further information.

“Wait, is it Campbell? I told you not to bring him up in this conversation, so you might have taken me too literally. It better not be that asshole! Not that I wouldn’t support you getting back together if you wanted to, but you better make him grovel first. He owes you that much.” Peyton continues rapidly firing questions at me, not giving me a moment to answer before finally stopping completely. “Sorry. You can answer now.”

“The way you shift between moods never ceases to amaze me.” I giggle, shoving the last bit of pastry into my mouth before washing it down with coffee.

“I’m not telling you who it was. Yes, you know them. No, it wasn’t Campbell. We aren’t ever getting back together.”

Peyton is silent for a few minutes before huffing loudly. “You better have a damn good reason for not telling me, Mari. You held out on me last time, but something tells me this guy is different. If it was horrible, I highly doubt you’d have that smile on your face, so what gives?” she questions, eying me skeptically for a few minutes.

“Are you kidding me!” I shriek, jumping to my feet as I pace back and forth. “It was the best sex I’ve ever had. And yes, before you ask, even better than when I was with Campbell.”

Campbell and I were each other’s first, which made it a lot easier to figure out what we both liked and didn’t like. The first few times were uneventful, but after some practice… let’s just say there is some truth behind the sayingscream myself hoarse.

“Damn, girl.” She whistles softly. “Are you going back for more?”
