“Fuck.” I moan as the final shockwaves of pleasure shoot through my body, but I’m still left feeling empty because that wasn’t even close to the real thing.

I hiss, yanking my fingers from between my legs just as my cell phone rings in my pocket. I roll over to the side, reaching into my pocket for my phone quickly and pulling it to my ear.

“Hello?” I ask tentatively, wondering who would call me this early in the morning.

“OMG, Marissa! Did I wake you? I’m so sorry!” Dolores’s voice filters through the phone, and I smile.

“Hey, Dolores. And no worries. I was just waking up,” I say, throwing my legs over the side of the bed and sitting up. “What can I do for you?”

“I hate to bother you, but do you think you could come in early today? Colt got a call about a decent size accident on the 40 and could use some backup.”

Pulling the phone away from my ear, I check the time before responding. “Sure. I need to hop in the shower and can be there in thirty minutes.”

I can hear Dolores mumbling to someone before she comes back. “Colt says he’ll pick you up.”

“No problem. I’ll be ready,” I respond before ending the call and flopping back onto the bed.

Apparently, there is no rest for the wicked, at least not today.

CHAPTERNINETEEN

FINN

It’s been four days since Marissa and I fell back into bed with each other. I expected her to slink into her shell, needing to be coaxed back out, but the exact opposite happened. It’s as if she finally stopped fighting the pull between us.Fightingprobably isn’t the best word for it. I think a better word would beaccepted. She’s accepted that I’m not going anywhere. I won’t lose interest suddenly or stop calling. I’m in it for the long haul.

As if on cue, the alarm on my phone sounds, letting me know it’s time to send Marissa her daily text messages. I’ve been sending her messages every day since I weaseled her number out of her, and today is the day I’m finally going to ask her to go out with me.

Hey, sugar. Did you have a chance to each lunch yet today?

Sugar

Yes, but I’m going to have to work out more regularly if you keep sending me slices of that delicious chocolate cake.

I make a mental note to thank Shelly. It’s kind of embarrassing, but I can’t cook, and the takeout bills were getting to be expensive, so I enlisted Shelly’s help. Between my mom and Mrs. Flores, I’ve been able to get a good idea of what Marissa’s favorite foods were. Although Mrs. Flores stopped being as helpful once she discovered Campbell was back in town.

At first, I was hurt by her change of heart, but it makes sense. Marissa wasn’t the only one that planned for her to spend the rest of her life with Campbell. It only makes sense that her mother would be team Campbell, but I just have to work a little of my magic and win her heart.

I’ll stop sending it if you really want me to.

Sugar

J/K. I may agree to a date if you promise to bring me an entire cake.

Done. I’ll pick you up at the station after your shift. What time do you get off?

Shit. It’s so easy for me to banter back and forth with Marissa, but that was not the way I wanted to ask her on a date. I had plans of sending her flowers and maybe asking Peyton for help to make it perfect for her. I wanted it to be special, not a spur-of-the-moment ask while texting back and forth during work.

Sugar

Sure. I get off at seven, but I need to head home to change. Can I meet you at Tallywackers at 7:30?

Sure. I can’t wait, sugar.

“Hell yeah!” I pump my fist into the air, causing the few patrons in the bar to shift their attention to me. I should be embarrassed by my outburst, but this is a step in the right direction. It’s taken weeks, but I’ve finally convinced Marissa to go on a real date with me. Sure, I took her to lunch, but that wasn’t a date. It was lunch, a lunch that I had to fight tooth and nail to convince her to agree to go. This is a real date. I asked, and she said yes. I have no idea who or what convinced her to give us a chance, but I won’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

“Shit, what do I do?” I whisper to myself as I panic. I was so focused on setting up a date with Marissa that I hadn’t put any thought into where we would go or what we would do.

I can’t go with the usual dinner and a movie, and I sure as hell can’t bring her back to the apartment over the bar or we’ll end up back in bed together. Not that I’d complain, but Marissa needs to know that I want more than an amazing fuck.
