“No. Don’t kill her,” Wiley called out. “She might be the only one who can get close enough to kill him. Send her in for the hit. She can avenge Tiberius’s death as proof of her commitment to The Chosen Way and Augustus.”

“Wait,” Augustus stopped his men in their tracks. “Yes. Let the one responsible for this travesty avenge my…Tiberius’s death. If she’s successful, she will kill him. If not, they will kill her, and we will send someone else to complete the job.” His eyes narrowed. “She has forty-eight hours to bring proof of his death. If she refuses or doesn’t bring proof, kill a member of her family. They say a woman is closest to her mother. Kill her mother.”

Rage bubbled up inside PJ. She lunged for Augustus.

His two bodyguards stepped in front of him and grabbed her arms.

Augustus smiled, his nostrils flaring. “That’s right. Make the carrot you hold in front of them very personal, and they’ll do anything.” He whipped his cape over his shoulder, strode past her to the SUV and slid into the back seat.

The two men holding her arms released her so fast she staggered to get her balance.

Within moments, Augustus was gone, leaving PJ standing beside Wiley, seething.

“You heard him. Your assignment is to kill the man who killed Tiberius today.”

“Tiberius is dead?” PJ spat on the ground. “Good riddance.”

“I wouldn’t say that too loud. He meant something to Augustus,” Wiley said. “Now, you have to kill the man who murdered him.”

“I’d rather give him a medal,” PJ said through clenched teeth.

“You also heard the conditions,” Wiley continued. “If you don’t make the hit and bring proof, they’ll kill your mother.”

And therein lay the problem she hadn’t been able to escape. Whenever she thought to escape or tell them to fuck off, someone else did it first and one of their family members paid the price.

“Who do I have to kill?” PJ asked. “Who killed Tiberius?”

Wiley met her gaze, a sneer pulling his lip up at one corner. “Your recruit. Judge.”

All the blood drained from PJ’s head. Her knees threatened to buckle beneath her. She drew in a breath, closed her eyes and pulled herself together.

She opened her eyes and focused on Wiley. “What happened?”

“They discovered your recruit was working with Hank Patterson and his Brotherhood Protectors.”

She should have known he was too good to be true. He didn’t belong with TCW. His sense of honor had gotten him out sooner than he’d probably wanted because he’d had to save a kid.

“He was your recruit, too,” she reminded Wiley. “You invited him in.”

Wiley nodded, his face pale. “I thought Augustus was going to kill me on the spot.”

“Why didn’t he?”

“I told them I assigned him to you because I knew you wouldn’t let him out of your sight. But then you did. You let him escape.”

“That doesn’t tell me how he killed Tiberius.”

“We found out where he was staying and that there was a big party at the Lucky Lady Lodge, with all the Brotherhood Protectors and Hank Patterson in attendance. Augustus sent Tiberius to make sure the party ended with a bang.” Wiley’s lips twisted. “Apparently, he was spotted, Judge pushed him over a rail, and he fell two stories onto a glass table.”

PJ tensed. The Lucky Lady Lodge had been her friend Molly’s pet project. If they were having a party at the lodge, all her friends would have been in attendance. “What about the big bang?”

“The kid, Mud, disassembled it before it could go off.”

The breath lodged in her throat released on a sigh. A lot of people could have been killed. Apparently, Judge had successfully averted disaster, killing Tiberius in the process.

And now, she had to kill him, or they would kill her sweet mother.

She didn’t dare say she wouldn’t do it. Somehow, she’d have to convince them that she’d killed Judge without actually doing it.
