“Just kill the bitch,” the voice said from inside the Jeep.

“If you kill me, you’ll never find Judge,” she said. “I won’t turn him over to anyone but Augustus. And I warn you, the mine has numerous tunnels and shafts. Some of them plummet hundreds of feet into the earth. Many of them are filled with poisonous gases.”

“She’s lying,” Wiley said. “She wouldn’t have taken him far into the mine. Just shoot her. We’ll find him without her.”

The four bikers and the bodyguards raised their rifles.

“Are you taking your orders from Wiley now?” she asked. “Has Augustus abdicated his authority, and Wiley’s making all the decisions?”

“Don’t shoot unless I give the order,” the voice commanded from inside the Jeep.

The rifles were lowered but held at the ready position.

“Wiley, if you’re so sure you’ll find Judge quickly,” the man in the Jeep said, “Go. Look in the mine.”

Wiley glared at PJ.

She cocked an eyebrow. “You better hurry. I said I’d make this deal at sundown. There’s not much time left before the sun sets behind the peaks.”

Wiley glanced back at the man still seated in the vehicle. He made no move to enter the mine. “I don’t have a flashlight.”

A rustling sound came from the Jeep, and a moment later, a flashlight flew through the air and landed at Wiley’s feet.

He bent to retrieve it, hit the switch and nothing happened.

Even from where Judge was watching, he could see the relief on Wiley’s face when the flashlight wouldn’t work.

“Oh, for the love of God.” The Jeep shook, and a leg emerged. Then two gloved hands gripped the sides of the doors, and Augustus emerged from inside, wearing his usual black mask that covered his eyes and head. He was dressed all in black but hadn’t worn the cape or the broad-brimmed hat.

“Bring me the traitor,” he commanded.

PJ lifted her chin. “When you have your men lay down their weapons. I’m not stupid. You could have them shoot both of us as soon as I bring him out.”

The man’s eyes narrowed. “You first, and I’ll consider it.”

PJ laid her rifle on the ground.

He motioned toward her jacket. “And the handgun in your pocket.”

She slipped the handgun from her pocket and laid it on the ground beside her rifle. “Your turn.”

“Do as she says,” Augustus ordered. He drew a handgun from his own belt and held it pointed at PJ, a sly grin forming on his face. “You didn’t say anything about me laying down my gun.”

She crossed her arms over her chest and waited for Augustus’s men to lay down their weapons.

They did so reluctantly.

“Now, bring me the bastard who killed Tiberius,” he said, his lips curling back from his teeth in a feral sneer.

“And if I don’t?” she questioned.

Judge frowned. This hadn’t been part of the plan. She was supposed to bring him out, then Augustus was supposed to come forward and aim his gun at Judge.

PJ wasn’t supposed to piss him off even more by not producing the man she’d promised would be there.

“If you don’t bring him out, I’ll shoot you. We’ll find him and kill him as well.”

From where Judge stood, he could see the smile PJ gave the man. “Just checking,” she said and called out over her shoulder. “Judge, get out here before I hit the switch on the detonator and blow your ass away.” She moved past one of the bikers, breaching the inner circle.
