“That’s far enough,” Augustus said, aiming at her chest.

“It’s okay,” she said. “You’ll see.”

Judge stepped free of the boulders, his hand on the gun in the back of his pants.

“She won’t set off the explosives,” Judge said aloud. “If she does, it will kill her as well.”

“I know,” the masked man said, turning his handgun toward Judge.

PJ leaned toward Augustus. “It isn’t even explosive clay. It’s sculptor’s clay, and the detonator is a metal bracket I picked up in a hardware store. He was unconscious when I secured it behind his back.” She grinned. “I told you I’d bring him for you to get the satisfaction of killing him. He’s all yours.” She waved her hand in a grandiose gesture toward Augustus.

A dark object flew off the tips of her fingers and pierced the throat of the man in the mask.

The hand holding the gun jerked, and the gun went off.

Judge dropped to the ground.

The bullet didn’t come close to him.

One of the bodyguards clutched his chest, his eyes wide and fell to the ground.

While PJ’s attention was on Judge, the man in the mask grabbed the knife, pulled it from his neck, and flung it to the ground.

PJ stood between Augustus and Judge, so he couldn’t get a clear shot without the risk of hitting PJ.

“PJ, look out!” Judge cried, but it was too late.

Augustus grabbed PJ from behind in a chokehold and pressed the handgun to her temple. “Bitch! I should’ve killed you yesterday. Kill that bastard,” he shouted to his men.

As they reached for their weapons, a loud voice echoed off the mountain, projected through a bullhorn. “You’re completely surrounded! Leave your weapons on the ground and get your hands in the air!”

One of the bikers ignored the command and dove for his gun.

A shot rang out. The biker landed on his knees, fell flat on his face and lay still.

“Anyone else want to die today?” the voice on the bullhorn called out.

The remaining men raised their hands in the air.

“Cowards!” Augustus cried. “I’m taking this bitch. If anyone comes close, I’ll shoot her.

“Judge, shoot him,” PJ called out.

Augustus tightened his arm around her throat, cutting off her air. “If he shoots, he’ll hit you.”

“Good,” she choked out. “The bullet will go through me into you. Shoot!”

“I don’t have a clear shot,” Judge called out.

“Shoot me, damn it,” she wheezed.

She quit trying to pull his arm from around her neck and reached for the scabbard on her belt. But she’d already used the knife. Her hand closed around a thin metal file, the one she used to pick locks.

Judge braced the gun in both hands and aimed at PJ’s chest.

“Shoot!” she coughed. In a flash, she jerked her hand up and over her head, stabbing the file into Augustus’s eye.

He screamed and released his hold around PJs neck.
