“You want to stay instead, Lucas?” I challenged him. If he was looking for a fight, I’d give him one.

“I didn’t say that,” Lucas stated.

“Ben, you’ve been acting like a feral cat dropped into a tin pan of scalding water ever since we arrived. You sure you can keep your head on straight and do the job?” James eyed me seriously.

Fuck.

I really had been an ass if they were this worried about leaving me behind with Moira. And I admitted, if only to myself, that I was worried about what would happen without them here as shields.

“Are you sure that Roman, Liam, and Owen can take the time to help?”

“I texted them earlier when she dropped that little bomb about the guy stalking her for months. Roman said they’d be here for whoever needed them to jump in. We can stick around another three days at most before we need to head to Maine,” Wyatt explained.

“Stay one more day. We need to go to her club tomorrow night, check out the patronage, and see if there’s anyone watching her. And then on Saturday, if she still hasn’t read the letter and we’re not any closer to figuring out how this stalker knows about us being here, then you guys can head out, and I will stay behind.”

“You think they’re nearby?” Aiden asked, considering me.

“I do. How the hell else would they know we’re here? Or they planted cameras nearby. It wouldn’t hurt for us to do a once-over of the house and grounds in the morning. It’d be easier if we had equipment that could pick up bugs.”

Aiden nodded. “Ben’s right. We need to see what we can find before we head off. I’m game to stay one more night, if you think Moira will let us stay.”

“She will. I’ll make sure of it.”

Lucas shook his head. “If you say so. But if one of y’all end up on the five o’clock news for murdering the other, don’t say I didn’t tell you so.”

“We’re not that bad.”

They looked at me like I was two beers shy of a six-pack. I held up my hands. “Okay, I’ll cool it and be as sweet as pecan pie.”

“You’re anything but sweet.” Aiden snorted with a shake of his head.

With his arms crossed in front of his chest, Wyatt said, “So then it’s decided. Myself, James, Lucas, and Aiden will head north on Saturday to Rory Ryder’s place in Maine. I’ll contact Roman first thing in the morning and give him the rundown on the mission. Ben, you will stay behind to help Moira with her stalker and get her to read the damn letter. Once both objectives have been accomplished, you can meet back up with us. Everyone in agreement?”

I watched my comrades, my brothers from another mother, all nod in agreement. I looked at Wyatt. “That’s the plan.”

“Good. I suggest we all get some sleep.” Wyatt wore the mantle of command like a second skin.

“One of us needs to take watch while the rest are sleeping. If this guy is threatening her like this and that threatened by us being here, there’s no telling what he’ll do.” I’d stay up all damn night if I must to ensure her safety.

Wyatt said, “I’ll take first watch then.”

I said, “I’ll take second watch.”

“Good. It’s almost eleven now. I’ll wake you up at three to relieve me. The rest of you, get some sleep. We’ve got a long day ahead of us tomorrow,” Wyatt ordered and rose from the chair.

The others bowed to his command and dispersed. I’d taken the couch. Moira had laid out pillows and a blanket. All I did was take my shoes off and lie down.

It was after four a.m. when I crept downstairs for some water. The house was silent. It was pitch black outside, the storm having long since moved on. Yesterday had stretched into infinity. While it might not seem like it to the others, Iwasmourning Evan. Yes, we went our separate ways about four years ago. But I never stopped caring about him.

But it enraged me that he was still trying to control me, even though he was no longer on this plane of existence. I wanted to know why he felt the need to write me a letter before he committed suicide. What could he have possibly meant by doing it?

And yes, I knew the answers I sought would be found in the damn letter. It’d become an albatross. I wanted to read it and I didn’t.

Between Evan, a house full of Navy SEALs, and the mystery guy who wouldn’t stop texting me, my mind was racing. Whoever was sending me those texts had become a nuisance. The vehemence behind the latest spate of texts shocked me. They were pissed that the guys were here and had been texting all damn night long. As much as I wanted to, I couldn’t shut off the phone in case someone from the club needed me or there was an emergency.

It was the price I paid for owning my own club. But after years of being beholden to others when it came to my employment, not having a boss order me about was worth the sacrifices I made along the way.
