“She’s going to need everything, including an extensive selection of undergarments, pajamas, shoes, socks,” Jasper interrupted. “And then we should probably add makeup, purses, and that type of thing.”

“Got it,” Sage replied with a nod of understanding and ushered her into the fitting room. Only it was unlike the discount store fitting rooms. There was comfortable leather seating outside her fitting room. And her fitting room itself was luxurious. The floor was carpeted. There was a comfortable chair. The mirror was a large beveled deal where she could turn and see each side of the outfit she was wearing. And the clothes were finer than any she had owned.

She didn’t belong here, she thought.

“Show me each piece, and I will help you make your selections,” Jasper ordered. “We’ll be right out here.”

And for once, she didn’t mind he was ordering her about one bit. She’d need his help because this was out of her wheelhouse.

She tried on the first piece. It was a flowy ivory top by Versace and a matching skirt with a slit up the side of her right leg. She padded out barefoot for the inspection.

“Turn,” Jasper stated.

Freya turned, grinding her teeth at being treated like a prized mare. It was part of their deal. And she reminded herself that a year from now, she would be a wealthy woman.

“Hmm. It will suffice. But I’m not sure the design suits you.” Jasper wore a serious expression as he studied the outfit.

“I’d prefer jeans, shorts, yoga pants, and tees.” Not that she had done yoga at all over the last few years. But they were great for chasing after a toddler with bucket loads of energy.

He waved me off. “We’ll get those too. I’ve already instructed Sage to set things like that aside for you. But those are things you don’t really need to try on since she has your size. Though she will need your bra size. What are you, a thirty-four C cup?”

“Oh, okay. And yes, that’s my bra size.” Had he looked through her meager belongings when she wasn’t looking? “How did you know?”

Jasper smirked. “I have my ways with women, lass. Go try on the next outfit.”

Over the next two hours, she tried on outfits and shoes, modeling each one. But as the afternoon progressed, she got into a groove and even started having fun. She anticipated the moment Jasper’s eyes lit up, which signaled whether the outfit was a winner. Even Maddie started having a say in her attire. Clapping and cheering when she turned, showing off the dresses, pantsuits, slacks and blouses, skirts and slinky tops.

But her favorite was watching Jasper’s eyes heat with lust at the form-fitting clothing. It caused an equal reaction in her body. She enjoyed his hot gaze caressing her body. Like he was considering every naughty thing he wanted to do to her.

It would be wrong to give in to the heat between them, wouldn’t it? Sex between them would make things awkward. And they were going to be living together for an entire year. She didn’t want to turn it into a battlefield. She’d already lived that existence and wouldn’t go back. She wanted peace and security for her and Maddie.

By the time they finished, Freya had lost count of the number of outfits she had tried on. But her new wardrobe was extensive; it was more clothes than she had ever owned at one time before. Jasper insisted she wear one of her new outfits out of the store. Because he was dressed down, they went with a cute knee-length day dress with strappy sandals.

Sage promised to have the rest of the stuff they couldn’t fit into the SUV delivered to Jasper’s cabin by the end of the week. They still left with bags upon bags of clothes. So many clothes she didn’t know when she would wear all these things. Just how many functions was she expected to attend?

And don’t even get her started on the clothes he insisted they bought for Maddie. She conceded that the little pale blue dress he picked out for her to wear to the wedding was adorable. But it was also a three hundred dollar dress for a toddler that wouldn’t fit her within six months. When she attempted to explain how fast babies and toddlers went through clothes, he leveled her with a stern look. It was a look that told her he would buy the darn dress anyway, regardless of her feelings or say so on the matter. And he hadn’t been mean about it either, so she couldn’t bitch about it. Which was frustrating as hell.

She could hate him if he was being overbearing. But no, he was all smiles and charm, saying how pretty Maddie would look while holding it up against Maddie’s little body. With her daughter preening and excited about the dress.

So she caved. It was like trying to fight her way upstream, nothing more than a fruitless endeavor where all she did was waste her breath. If he wanted to squander his money on designer clothes for a toddler, he could have at it.

Jasper couldn’t believe the transformation in Freya. She was dressed in a silky sheath dress in a stunning mint green color that made her golden skin glow and a pair of sandal flats in nude. Freya didn’t like heels and refused to wear them when running errands.

He’d had Sage add all the accessories too, including purses, jewelry, watches, footwear, and on down the line. Freya wasn’t comfortable with the extent of her new wardrobe. But he would help her push past her unease into acceptance. And it was why he added even more. It was rather perverse, he knew, but he enjoyed seeing her off balance. She had a real problem with money. Something he would need to cure because all his family had money. It wouldn’t bode well if she was constantly scowling at them.

But using the kid was a stroke of genius.

Because with Maddie, Freya was a softie. Not that he could blame her, since he was gone over on the little girl. Her laughter was infectious. Her smiles warmed his jaded heart. And deep within the recesses of his soul, he wanted to be her stepfather for real.

At RMD Industries headquarters in downtown Denver, they were ushered into Josh’s office. At least Jase and Emilia were out of the office today, so he didn’t have to worry about running into them and explaining his upcoming nuptials.

Josh sat behind his modern black desk and glanced up at their entrance. “Cousin, I was wondering if you were still going to make it in.” He rose from his desk and rounded it to greet them.

Josh gave the appearance of a suave, debonair Irishman in his three-piece charcoal gray pinstripe suit. He held out his hand to Freya.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you. You must be Freya Meyer and little Maddie,” he murmured with a voice full of Irish charm.

Jasper wanted to box his ears for looking at her when he spied the blush creeping up Freya’s neck and into her cheeks. If they weren’t family, he would. And it was the only reason he didn’t go all Scottish highlander on his ass. When had he become this possessive of Freya? They hadn’t even slept together, and he was ready to go to war to keep other men away from her.
