“Gerritsen,” she replied, rising into a sitting position. Jasper removed the condom, tied it, and then rose to dispose of it in the trash in the kitchen.

On his way back in, he asked, “Why didn’t the police help you and Maddie out?”

She swallowed the fear back, deciding she needed to trust him because he was putting himself on the line for her. “Because he’s a cop in Macon, Georgia.”

Jasper’s brows rose, and shock flooded his face. “Well, bloody hell.”

That summed up the situation nicely.

Freya held Maddie as she walked into the courthouse beside Jasper. This was it. The day she married Jasper and discovered if her identification was worth the price she paid for it.

Jasper looked dashing in his black suit and tie with the ivory dress shirt. He’d pulled his inky hair back into a stubby ponytail at his nape. And he’d trimmed his beard, so it was close-shaven.

Dashing couldn’t describe his looks. The man was downright fuckable. She should know from experience.

And what an experience it had been too. Three orgasms, each one more powerful than the last, had been her reward for taking a chance and giving him a blow job. But it had been his parting words that had flipped her world upside down. He’d still been naked, his cobalt gaze studying her while she dressed, and he said, “Starting tomorrow night, you’ll be sleeping in my room.”

Freya would have to sleep in the same bed. It was part of their contractual agreement. And it left her uneasy. Because after last night, there was no doubt they wanted each other. Yet, she didn’t know if she’d be able to keep her hands off him. Was that what this year would bring? The two of them fucking like rabbits every night until the year together was up.

Could she continue having sex with him without developing feelings for him? Or was she damning herself by sleeping with him last night?

Freya wasn’t certain—about anything anymore.

Jasper entered her life and upended her entire existence. She had clothes, food, a comfortable bed, and a roof over her head. She didn’t have to worry about how she would provide for Maddie because it was just done. Jasper didn’t blink when it came to their needs. He just did what was needed.

His palm pressed against her low back as he steered them through security. Once they were through security, he led her over to the small group waiting for them.

Josh Ryan stood in a charcoal gray suit, speaking quietly to Gabe Ryan in a dark navy suit. A striking woman was standing beside Gabe. She was about Freya’s height, her chestnut hair in loose waves around her slim shoulders, and she wore a form-fitting, knee-length, pale pink dress. She must be Gabe’s wife.

They turned their gazes in their direction as they approached. And she was supremely thankful Jasper had bought her and Maddie new clothing because, for once, she didn’t feel out of place or insecure.

It didn’t hurt that she wore an ivory v-neck Oscar de la Renta cocktail dress with a pair of strappy silver heels. And don’t even get her started on the designer dress her twenty-month-old was wearing. Although she had to admit Maddie looked adorable in her pale blue dress with the white daisies.

“You guys made it,” Josh said.

“Josh, we need to have a meeting sometime next week. Gabe, Sophia, it was good of you to come. Freya, you remember my cousins, Josh and Gabe. And this is Sophia, Gabe’s wife.” Jasper took care of the introductions.

Sophia beamed. “It’s so nice to meet you. And who’s this cutie pie?”

“This is Maddie.”

“She’s adorable. How old?”

“Twenty months. Do you have any children?”

Sophia’s face softened. “Yes. We have a seven-month-old, Matthew, and he’s currently at home with his nanny.”

These people have led such different lives. “That’s a fun age. They are able to sit up, really recognize people, and begin sleeping through the night, mostly.”

“Yes, he’s definitely a keeper. Although, I’m looking forward to having him sleep through the night. We’re still not there yet.”

“Give it a few more months. She was eleven months when she finally started sleeping through the night. There are still times she wakes up and needs me. I figure it’s what life will be like until she’s an adult. And even then, I doubt I will stop worrying about her.”

Maddie was a little shy of all the adults. She held out her little arms. “Ja’per.”

“Aye, my little lassie.” Jasper lifted her into his arms like it was no big deal. And her daughter snuggled up against him, staring solemnly at everyone else.
