Warning bells sounded. He didn’t fall in love. He certainly wouldn’t with a woman he married to claim a fortune.

“I’m thinking I’m going to enjoy being married to you, lass.” He kissed the tip of her nose and then withdrew.

She rose, yanking her panties and shorts up. “Me too. Don’t you have work or something?”

Because she needed a hot minute to collect herself after those revelations.

“I just finished my work, lass.”

She quirked a brow.

“You know, happy wife, happy life.” He suggestively winked.

Laughter erupted from her soul. If nothing else, he made her feel good when she’d spent so many years feeling like dirt. “Good one. I need to finish meal prepping our dinner before Maddie wakes from her nap.”

“What are we having?”

“Mini meatloaves with a brown sugar ketchup glaze, fried potatoes, and salad.” It was a dish she hadn’t made in years and had a hankering for.

“Mmm. Sounds amazing. I’ve never had mini meatloaves before.”

“It’s like the regular kind, but they’re individually sized. I think they cook better and faster than the old-school way of doing it.”

“Well, then mine should be really large.” He winked. The innuendo wasn’t lost on her.

“Mama,” Maddie’s voice filtered in through the baby remote on the kitchen counter.

She sighed. At least they weren’t in the middle of fucking each other blind when she woke up. “Meal prep will have to wait.”

“I’ve got her.”

“Are you sure?”

“Absolutely. If she needs to be changed, I can do it. Then we’ll play, that way you can handle the dinner stuff.”

Her ovaries fucking sighed, because he was a total dreamboat.

“Um, okay, thanks.” She still wasn’t used to having help where Maddie was concerned. But he made her want to lean and give him all her problems.

Except danger lay that way.

Freya carted a sleeping Maddie inside from the car. She had loved getting to run around in Vail. The kid was a bundle of joy and as fierce as her mum. But he expected nothing less.

Jasper grabbed the bags from the trunk and hauled them inside. He’d bought Maddie books and dresses and dolls. It had made her so happy. And he’d not been able to resist. When Freya gave him the side eye, he’d simply smiled and grabbed something off a shelf he’d seen her noticing.

There were a few things he’d grabbed she’d not seen because she’d been paying attention to Maddie.

He found her in their room, and she looked ready to drop. “I got everything in. It’s down in the living room.”

“Thanks. We can deal with all that stuff tomorrow. You know, you really don’t have to keep buying Maddie stuff. She already thinks you could lasso the moon.”

Warmth suffused him, because that tiny spitfire had him wrapped around her pinky. “I enjoy doing it. Seeing her happy gives me a thrill. And I’ve got the money.”

“I know, but—”

He tugged her into his arms. This woman, who could be trying to bleed his accounts dry, scolded him for spending money on them. Did she not realize how refreshing it was? “I have more money than I could spend in multiple lifetimes. Spending a few hundred bucks here and there won’t even make a dent in it.”
