“Just spit it out already.”

“Ian Gerritson took an extended leave of absence a month ago. He hasn’t been seen since. I had my team track him. He was last spotted in Salina, Kansas, after leaving Kansas City. He used his credit card at a gas station.”

Jasper’s heart dropped to his toes. “And no one has seen him since then?”

“Nope.”

“It would be far too easy for someone to rent a campground in the area and pay cash.”

“Precisely.”

“I need to call and check in on her.” Jasper whipped out his phone. He called, but it went straight to voicemail. He tried a second time. She could be with Maddie and ignoring her phone.

He tried calling a few times but got nothing. Then he checked his security system and blanched.

Oh, fuck no! How could he have been so careless with her? This was all his goddamn fault. He’d demanded her trust even with all she’d been through, and he’d not extended the same trust to her.

“What is it?”

He looked at his cousin-in-law as terror grabbed hold of him. “The security feed from the house. He’s got her. Look.”

He held out his phone and watched Ian drag Freya out of the house with Maddie in her arms. He had a gun on her. That fucker held his woman at gunpoint.

He shot to his feet. “Fuck! I need to get there. I need to help her. I need—”

“A helicopter and backup. Does she have the find my phone app?” Asher asked.

“I think so.”

“Great. Let me get this to my team. See if they can locate where he’s taking her. Then like I said, we’ll go in guns blazing and rescue them. But we need to be smart about this. In fact, I shouldn’t even be taking you along.”

He snorted. “You can refuse to help me. But I can hire a pilot to fly me there and have a car waiting for me in under an hour. Your choice.”

“Fuck. This family has more stubborn, pigheaded individuals than any other. Come on.”

Jasper wouldn’t rest easy until they were safe. He’d promised her he would never let that bastard touch them again.

And he had failed her.

He failed because he’d been mired in his own doubt and heartache. He hadn’t brought them with him. Because he needed time alone.

And now they both might die because he’d been short-sighted and narrow-minded. If anything happened to them, he would never forgive himself.

Freya wasn’t sure how it happened. One minute, she was playing with Maddie in the living room, acting like there was nothing wrong when it felt like her heart was bleeding out. In the next, she stared dumbfounded, not believing what she was seeing, while Ian pointed a gun at Maddie.

“Hello, wife,” he gritted out.

“Ian. What are you doing here?” He looked even meaner. He’d always been fit. Ian prided himself on his good looks. He had the all-American blond hair and blue eyes with a smile that hid the monster beneath.

“I’m here to bring my wife and daughter home.”

“You’re crazy.”

“And you’re a fucking criminal. You shot me, you fucking bitch,” he shouted. His anger spewed forth, and she spied the psychopath beneath the good looks.

“Because you were hurting me and about to hurt Maddie.”
