“Got into technology. Lived without regrets for a long time until I realized bad choices always come back to haunt us. Just need to start over.”

“I hear you. Like I said, submit that résumé, and I’m sure we’ll talk again soon, Michael.”

“Thanks.” Taking that as the polite dismissal it was, Michael eased back to his own stool and finished his burger. Still good, even if a bit cold now. The fries he left behind, along with a decent tip for Ramie to close out his tab. Another Old Fashioned wouldn’t have gone amiss, but he did need to drive and a DUI on his second night in town was a bad look, especially on someone who needed a job.

He did swing by the small general store for a few groceries and snacks, mostly sandwich things and pretzels, plus a box of his favorite chocolate chip cookies. The junk food was stuff Kenny used to pick on him about, because of the high sugar and salt content, but Michael didn’t care about his opinion anymore. He was going to fucking eat what made him happy. No more food shaming from his boyfriend/partner, who thought a glass of water and three cigarettes was a balanced breakfast. No more being what other people expected him to be.

I’m starting over. I’ll find out who Michael Pearce really is. One way or another.

Chapter Four

Josiah scraped the now-shredded chicken breast off his cutting board and back into the slow cooker, savoring a deep inhale of the yummy but simple white bean chicken chili he’d set that morning before his meeting with Michael Pearce. This recipe was one of Seamus’s favorites and it was so easy, with just a few ingredients. Josiah preferred the hot green chilies to the mild ones, but he made it this way to appease Seamus. He still wasn’t entirely sure how Seamus felt about him taking on the Elmer Pearce job, so he wanted to tread with caution. Butter up his roommate.

Seamus had texted he’d be home by six for supper, so Josiah carefully arranged bowls of extra toppings for the white chili, like tortilla chips, sour cream, and shredded cheese. And he had a chilled beer ready for Seamus after he’d come inside and locked his sidearm away. Seamus took a long pull from the can, then belched loudly.

“Smells good,” Seamus said. “I’m starving.”

“Then please, let’s sit and eat.”

Josiah served them both portions of chili, grateful when Seamus immediately began to eat, rather than harangue him with questions about today’s meeting. Pleased by the brief respite, Josiah focused on flavoring the slightly bland chili with loads of sour cream and cheese.

“You meet Michael Pearce today?” Seamus asked after a few minutes of silent eating.

It seemed an odd question when Seamus knew that meeting a new client had been part of his day’s plans. Except... “How do you know Michael’s name?”

“Met him early this morning. Was passin’ by the Pearce house and saw a strange car. After the burglary incident this summer, figured it was a good idea to see who was staying at his house while old Elmer’s in the hospital.”

“Oh. Right. Of course. And yes, I met with Michael this afternoon. He’s in town to help get Elmer back on his feet.”

“So he told me.” Seamus gazed at him over a big spoon loaded with chili and toppings. “He’s good-looking, too.”

“Is he?” Josiah tried to play dumb, because Michael was the tall, muscular type that he’d lusted after during his nursing training but had always been too scared to speak to, much less attempt to pursue, terrified he’d flirt with the wrong kind of guy. But Michael had been so patient with Josiah today, like the Seamus Josiah had first moved in with two years ago.

Seamus watched him a beat before shoveling that dripping spoon into his mouth and chewing.

“Michael is looking for daytime work,” Josiah pressed on, hoping to keep Seamus’s temper on an even keel with simple information. “That way I’ll work similar hours as you and be home in the evenings the way you like it.”

“Good. I know you like to keep busy, especially when I’m not home, but I need you here, Jo-jo.”Here when I need my dick suckedhung off that statement.

“And I like being here for you. How about a back rub after you’re done eating?”

“Sounds good. Very good.”

Josiah didn’t eat much more after that, his stomach pulled tight with nerves. He couldn’t get a good read on Seamus’s mood, so whatever happened after the massage could either be moderately pleasant, or unbearably painful.

It ended up being somewhere in between. After giving Seamus his toothpick and cleaning up dinner, Josiah followed him into the bedroom. Seamus stripped down and stretched out, and then made a spinning gesture with his index finger, so Josiah stripped, too.

Josiah did his best to put his “housemate” to sleep with the hardest massage he could manage, working knots of tension out of Seamus’s neck and shoulders for what felt like forever. Seamus even let out a soft, content snore at one point.

Hoping Seamus had nodded off, Josiah slid to the side of the bed and wiped his hands on a towel. Strong arms grabbed him by the waist and dumped him onto his stomach. Seamus crouched over him and immediately began to thrust his hard cock against Josiah’s crease, moving harder and faster with each passing moment. “Don’t forget who this ass belongs to,” Seamus said in his ear. “It’s mine.”

“Yours,” he whispered.

Seamus rubbed off until he came, his release coating Josiah’s back in sticky ropes that squished between his skin and Seamus’s belly. Seamus rubbed his cock all around in the mess before settling on top of him, squashing Josiah uncomfortably against the mattress.

The breathing in his ear slowly evened out. Positive he’d be trapped here for a while, Josiah closed his eyes and remembered Michael’s kind, patient smile.

And that smile followed him into a shallow, restless sleep.
