Page 13 of Tryst's Temptation

I rubbed my stomach. “There is a chance I’ll be hungry again in two or three days’ time.”

He held his hand out, and in it were two Mexican hot-chocolate cookies.

“Maybe just one.” I plucked it from his palm.

“I was only offering one,” he said, popping the second in his own mouth. “Can I interest you in a walk?”

“I desperately need one after all the food I consumed.”

When Tryst took my hand and led me to the trail up the hillside where we often watched the setting sun, it felt like the most natural thing in the world.

“I had a really nice day. Thank you,” I said once we reached the top.

“It is the best Thanksgiving I’ve had in a very long time.” He brought my hand to his lips. “Thank you for sharing it with me.”

“Tryst, I—”

He let go of my hand and put the tip of his index finger on my lips. “Shh. My apologies if I’ve gone too far.”

He pulled away before I had the chance to tell him he hadn’t. That I wished he’d gone further, and rather than kiss the back of my hand, I wished he’d kissed my lips.

I sighed. While I’d been using every excuse I could think of to remain here, perhaps it was time for me to leave the ranch.

“I’ve completed my report and need to move on to the next phase of my investigation.”

He turned to face me rather than the view. “What do you mean?”

“I’ll be traveling to the port where the first, and smaller, container raid took place.”

“In Yavaros?”

“That’s right.”

“When will you return?”

“From there, I’ll be heading to the Port of Altamira.” It was where the ten shipping containers raided at the Port of Felixstowe had made their departure.

“Jaicon?”

“Yes?”

“You haven’t answered my question.”

“If you mean when will I return, I don’t believe I will.”

He studied me. “I must admit, I am somewhat surprised you didn’t mention it until now.”

“The reunification process is complete, as is my work here.”

“I can be of assistance.”

I raised a brow. “What do you mean?”

“I could go with you to Yavaros and to Altamira.”

“Why?”

He smiled. “As I’m sure you recall, your colleagues at K19 staged their initial investigations from here. I was privy to the intelligence resulting in both raids.”
