“Laird would be disappointed in me.”
“Hang up, and I’ll ring you back.”
“I hope I can figure out how to answer.”
“Now, you’re just being obtuse.” I ended the call and did as I said I would. Tryst picked up immediately. I sighed as I gazed at the face of the man I so wished was here with me.
“Jaicon by moonlight, one of my very favorite things in life.”
“You are a very handsome man, Tryst.”
He raked his beard with his hand. “Gray and all?”
“Especially gray. I believe I’ve told you before it suits you.”
His eyes twinkled even as they scrunched with his smile. “You are good for my ego, Jacy. More than my ego; you are good for me.”
I sat down on the grass. “I’m sorry I said not knowing what would happen between us frightens me.”
Tryst shook his head. “Do not apologize for being honest.”
“You said you’d like to find out.”
“I was being honest as well.”
“I would too.”
He closed his eyes. “There are no words I wished to hear more this New Year’s Eve.”
“None?”
He shook his head and laughed. “I will admit to fantasizing about others. However, just knowing you are open to seeing where this journey takes us fills me with joy.”
“Tell me your fantasy.” I could feel the heat of his gaze through the phone.
“I will, but first, I need you to return inside. You look chilled.”
“I’m missing thechimeneatoo.”
“Tell me when you are alone as I am, and I will begin.”
“Do you want me to ring you back?”
“No. I will stay with you as you walk.”
He remained silent until after I was inside the guesthouse and had shut the bedroom door.
“I’m alone, Tryst.”
“Put the phone down but keep it somewhere close.”
I set it in the charging cradle on the bedside table.
“Lie down, and I will do the same.”
I stretched out on my side and looked up at the mobile’s screen.
“The first night I had this fantasy, we were in Montecito, staying with Kade and Merrigan. You were in the bedroom next to me.”
