“She may one day soon.” While I said I believed she might, I responded she would more out of hope than the belief it would happen.

“She means something to you, doesn’t she?”

“She does, little one.”

“You should tell her that.”

“You are right, and I will.” I only wished I didn’t feel as though it was already too late.

Over the courseof the next two weeks, I saw little of Jaicon. The investigation into the deaths of the two men in La Higuera as well as into the sex-slave auction where Luisa Reeve’s photo still appeared necessitated she travel regularly to California. As much as I wanted to assist, I did not feel comfortable leaving Jada.

Each time we spoke of it, Jaicon assured me she understood and encouraged me to continue making Jada my priority. At the same time, she was cool and aloof, widening the chasm I already felt between us.

It was hard to imagine there had been a time we felt comfortable enough to sleep in each other’s arms, or lost ourselves in fantasies and kisses.

“Hello, Brix,”I said, pleased to see he was calling.

“How’s Jada?”

“She has good days and bad, but that is to be expected. How is Addy?”

“The morning sickness is better. She attributes it to being here in Mexico.”

“I cannot tell you how happy that makes me. Do you think she would feel well enough for the two of you to join us for dinner?”

“I’ll ask, but I’m sure she’ll say she’d enjoy it very much.”

“This evening?”

“That sounds great, Tryst. We’ll see you around six.”

When our call ended, I felt more like myself than I had in days. So much so, I called Jaicon to invite her to join us.

I was further elated when she graciously accepted and said she looked forward to it.

I went about my day, prepping food for our meal.

“You’re in a good mood today,” said Lynne when she came into the kitchen a couple of hours later.

“I have invited my nephew and his wife, as well as Jaicon, to join us for dinner this evening.”

“The normalcy will do Jada good. You too, obviously.”

As always, I appreciated her frankness.

Unfortunately, the evening did not go as planned. While I enjoyed the time with Brix and Addy very much, Jada was more withdrawn than she had been in the last few days. And, at the last minute, Jaicon canceled, citing a last-minute trip to California.

When Lynne and Addy insisted they clean up after the meal, Brix and I went outside to light thechimenea.

“I realized earlier I asked about Jada, but I neglected to ask about you, Tryst.”

“I am the same as I always am, nephew.”

He shook his head. “No, you are not, and don’t say it’s because of Jada. Something else is going on with you.”

I glanced in the direction of thecasitanext door, sad to find it dark, but also relieved that Jaicon had been honest about having to go to California.

“What happened between the two of you?” he asked.
