“That is not why you came.”

“I was concerned about you.”

He shook his head again.

“Why do you keep doing that? Do you think you know my mind better than I do?”

“I know when you’re not being truthful.”

“How nice. You’re accusing me of lying to you?”

He leaned forward and rested his cheek against mine. “Why are you here, Jaicon?”

“I couldn’t…” My eyes filled with tears. “I don’t know. I told myself I wasn’t ready. I’m not ready. I just…I couldn’t stay away.”

He let out the breath I hadn’t realized he was holding. “I am so glad you’re here.”

“I have to ask. Whose house is this, Tryst? Is it Rosa’s house? Did you build it for your late wife?”

He shook his head again. Slowly.

“Who then?”

“I have asked myself that question many times.”

“Did you ever answer?”

“I don’t think I knew before.”

“Tryst…”

“After the fire and the reconstruction of the meditation center was complete, I felt purposeless. That’s why I built it.”

“Do you intend to live in it?” I asked.

“I think I would like to.”

“You’ll need furniture.”

He laughed, and I smiled, but his eyes scrunched. “Do you have any idea how much I want to kiss you?”

“What are you waiting for?”

His tongue swept the line of my lips, coaxing them open. Then it slipped inside, to swirl against mine. He pulled away, nipping my lip before soothing it, and trailed more kisses from my mouth to my jaw, then up my cheek, to my ear.

“Jacy.” My name sounded like a sigh, and he stunned me by stepping away from me. “What happened?”

I knew what he meant, and I couldn’t pretend otherwise. “Is there somewhere we can sit?”

He led me out the front door and to the built-in sitting area. “Will you be warm enough?”

“If you sit beside me, I think so.”

Once we’d both settled onto the bench, he draped his arm behind me.

I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. There was so much I wanted to say, and while I’d rehearsed it over and over again, I found myself struggling with where to begin.

“We were at Butler Ranch. It was when Los Caballeros had an emergency meeting.”
