“Why did you do that?”

“I wanted to be sure I wasn’t dreaming again.”

“Again?” I asked.

He nodded. “Almost every night. Now, I know it’s why I built this house. I dreamed of us being here. Each time, I woke alone…”

“I’m sorry, Tryst. I’m so sorry I hurt you.”

“When you said things went the way they were supposed to, that neither of us was ready for a romantic relationship, it felt like a knife to my heart.”

“I’m—”

He pressed his lips to mine. “I have more I need to say.”

I nodded.

“I broke down your words so many times. They replayed in my head over and over again until, one day, I finally heard the part that really mattered. I heard that neither of us was ready. Iwantedto be. But you were right. There were—are—things I haven’t resolved in my mind or my heart.”

“Oh. Um. I see.”

He smiled and kissed the tip of my nose. “You do not.”

“Then, help me to, Tryst.”

“I believe we both have things to resolve, but we do not have to be apart to do so. We can help each other.”

“Do you really think so?”

“I do.”

I leaned forward, burying my head in the crook of his neck. “I’m frightened.”

“As am I. But we will help each other overcome our fears.”

“I suppose we should return to thecasitanow.”

He shook his head.

“No?”

“I cannot be apart from you.”

“Nor I, you.”

“What do we do?” I asked.

“Improvise.”

TRYST

“Wait here,” I said before going out to the trailer I’d used as an office and for storage when I was heavy into the house’s construction. I’d kept pillows, sleeping bags, and even a queen-size air mattress for the nights I was too tired to return to the other house. Thankfully, I’d bought it all new and only used it a time or two.

Jaicon’s face lit up when I came inside and dropped the pile on the floor, by the fireplace.

“One more thing.” I ran back out to grab a few logs.
