‘Did you have an argument?’ I questioned, trying to work out what had gone on.

‘No. It’s not like that.’

‘What is it like?’ Salvatore invited, without turning to look at his brother.

‘We’re serious, well at least I am.’ He threw open his arms. ‘I told her I wanted to ask permission to marry her.’ He opened his eyes wider as he spoke.

‘Go on.’ Salvatore breathed out fast through his nose as the whole of his body stiffened, as he turned to look at Gabriel.

‘She said she would marry me, but not until she’s finished her studies.’

‘Giordano women,’ Salvatore replied with a wry smile on his lips.

‘Then what happened?’ I questioned, eager to know where my baby sister was.

‘She said she didn’t want to talk about it anymore.’ Gabriel looked between his brothers and me as we stared at him waiting for information. An embarrassed blush hit his face, ‘And when I asked her to reconsider, she said I wasn’t listening to her point of view and went indoors.’

‘When?’ The desperation inside me made me stand. It was all I could do to not walk forward to grab his arms and shake him.

‘Over two hours ago.’

‘Where did you go?’

‘I followed her and couldn’t find her. So, I went for a drive.’

‘Where to?’ Romeo questioned.

‘I’ve got no fucking idea. I was angry with her for turning me down and for doing a vanishing act.’

‘I don’t understand.’ I sat back down as I tried hard to form a timeline in my head.

‘Bruno, phone the Giordano villa and find out if Mia is there,’ Salvatore instructed.

Bruno walked away from our small group holding his phone to his ear. With all our guests now gone, the silence and emptiness of the terrace exacerbated the rising terror inside of me.

‘Oh no… please let her be there,’ I whispered.

‘Boss… Alessandro says his daughter hasn’t returned home.’

‘Give me the phone.’

With my view hampered with unshed tears, I looked on as Salvatore walked a few steps away from where I was sitting and spoke to my papa, then as he turned on his heel and returned.

‘Alessio Giordano and his men will be joining us.’ He spoke to the handful of soldiers on guard. Then he directed the rest of the information at his brothers, Bruno and Aldo, ‘Call the men back. I want this villa and the surrounding area searched thoroughly before they get here.’

‘We need to find her!’ Gabriel almost shouted out in desperation.

Salvatore moved next to me and after placing his hand on my shoulder in reassurance, he added, ‘We do and fast.’

‘What are you thinking, Jnr?’ Romeo probed.

‘I’m thinking he’s back,’ Salvatore growled out the answer in disgust. ‘And he’s got Mia.’

CHAPTER NINETEEN

SERAFINA

‘Not Mia.No… not my baby sister. Please, no.’ I heard my pleas leave me just before I started to wretch. It was in those few seconds, that the sickness I’d been swallowing down since my encounter with Enzo forced its way up and I leant to the side and threw up.
