A son for a mama.As I slit Zeno Giordano’s throat in front of his papa and brother.

‘It seems you are incapable of protecting any woman you care about.’ His statement felt like a knife to my gut. In my mind, I saw flashbacks of my mama and Serafina alone in London and for a couple of seconds I wondered if he was right.

‘FUCK YOU, Giordano!’

‘I’ll keep Giovanna, until I’m satisfied my family is out of harm’s way.’

‘I’m beginning to wonder if your papa only produces “feccia” and “codardi” for sons.’

As silence filled the gap between us, I knew I’d struck a chord.

‘Arsehole!’

‘You should be here working with us to avenge your sister… I’ll find Enzo and I’ll deal with him, without your help. Then I’ll come after you. A coward shouldn’t be too hard to find.’

‘I’ll be waiting.’

My cell went dead.

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

SERAFINA

With Gabriel,my mum, and the specialist nursing team with Mia, I took my leave of the room, with strict instructions to come and find me if needed.

But thankfully, I knew my little sister was stable and I would only be called if she showed signs of waking up.

When they’d first found Mia, we’d rushed with her to the hospital. Scans had revealed that she’d received a blow to the back of her head, probably on the rock the men had found her up against. But after doing various tests on her, the consultants there weren’t overly concerned, as they all showed that there was no obvious damage or bleeding to the brain. After receiving the blow, we perceived she had fallen unconscious, and had then slipped into a coma.

I hoped when she woke up, she’d remember none of her ordeal. Her clothing had been tested and found to have semen all over it, but she showed no signs of being raped. I could only hope she’d fallen unconscious quickly and remembered nothing.

In the two days she’d been kept in, she had shown signs of brain activity, her eyelids fluttered on an occasion and once our mum had sworn blind that she’d seen her lift her right index finger momentarily. With Salvatore concerned for our security, the consultants happy that she would eventually wake, and all her vital signs stable, we’d taken her home to be cared for.

It had been four days from hell.

A feeling of complete exhaustion overwhelmed me; I didn’t think I’d ever felt so tired. Closing my eyes in response, I placed a hand to the cool wall beside me.

Maria had been making sure we were all eating, but my body was screaming out for sleep. My heart however was crying out for my husband. We had been like ships passing in the night while he worked tirelessly to find Enzo and I cared for Mia.

All I wanted to do now was to make the world go away and to find solace in his arms. I wanted to feel his heart beat next to mine, while the sound of the waves crashed below us. I needed to show him how sorry I was for not telling him the truth and to receive his forgiveness. But most of all, I just desired to feel his arms wrapped around me as he silently let me know all would be okay.

I had no idea now, how on earth I’d survived our years apart. Our souls were so intrinsically woven into each other’s.

The sudden noise of cars coming to a screeching halt outside our home, had much needed adrenalin flooding my system and my eyes flying open.

Salvatore.

Knowing he’d arrived home, I half run and half walked to the top of the staircase and not trusting myself, I kicked off my shoes and threw them to one side before descending the stairs as fast as I could manage. As I finally made the vestibule, I clutched hold of the banister rail and instinctively stopped to find out where he was.

‘BRUNO!’ his deep voice bellowed as our front door flew open and smashed into the venetian plaster, we’d had done on the feature wall. Shards of the French grey colour fell to the marble floor as he appeared in the large doorway.

I didn’t think I’d ever seen him so angry. His eyes looked black and empty. His fists were balled at his sides, and he looked fit to explode with the rage he was so obviously only just managing to keep under control. Salvatore’s whole persona was menacing and threatening.

He crossed the threshold into our home and after snatching up my hand, he pulled me tightly up against him. As he carried on walking with me at his side, he shouted out for Bruno again. His grip tightened, making sure he didn’t lose me as he made his way from the front to the back of the house.

‘Salvatore?’ I probed, but he didn’t even turn his head towards me.

‘What’s happened?’ I said the words, even though I wasn’t sure I wanted to know the answer.
