‘Boss.’ A dishevelled looking Bruno came in the back through the open doors.

‘Tell me something I want to hear,’ Salvatore demanded.

‘Enzo is at the olive factory in Cantanzaro.’

‘You’re sure?’ Salvatore tilted his chin up as he questioned him.

‘I logged on to the security footage. He went there to hide as soon as he left here.’

‘And you didn’t contact me because?’ Salvatore furiously shouted out the question, before moving to close the gap between us and Bruno, until the two men’s faces were only inches apart.

‘I found it less than thirty minutes ago and if he’d left a few hours or a day later, going would have been a waste of time.’

Salvatore inhaled a deep breath, nodded at Bruno, and stood down.

‘And he hasn’t moved?

‘I’ve scoured the footage, and I can’t see any movement at all. I believe he’s hidden his car behind the fermentation barrels and covered it over.’

‘You’ve done well, Bruno. Thank you.’

Salvatore lifted his spare hand and clamped it down on Bruno’s shoulder and the earlier fraught atmosphere between the two of them lifted.

‘How many men do we have in or near Cantanzaro?’

‘Nico, his brother and their sons,’ Aldo answered.

‘Nine,’ Bruno confirmed.

‘I want them to surround the factory. Contact Romeo and Alessio Giordano, get them and their men to meet us there…Tell them to wait for us,’ Salvatore instructed. ‘I want their eyes on him until we reach there. Enzo Ferraro is mine. No one is to touch him… make sure they understand.’

‘Yes, Boss.’

‘We leave in ten minutes.’

‘And Gabriel?’ I questioned, as I looked at the stairs beside us.

‘No, he’ll stay here,’ Salvatore replied.

‘Boss.’ Bruno made to walk away to make the arrangements.

‘I’m coming,’ I spoke and pulled myself slightly away from his side to look up at him.

‘No.’ He shook his head vigorously. Almost immediately I could see his anger rising.

‘He hurt Mia… I want to come,’ I pleaded.

‘I won’t risk you, Serafina.’ His body stiffened as he spoke. ‘Don’t ask me to. I won’t put you in a position where you could be hurt.’

‘I’m not at risk if I’m with you.’ I expected to see my words have some effect on him, but if anything, they made him more stoic.

As I spoke, I became aware that for the first time in a couple of days we were alone. I pulled myself from his side and turned around in his arms until I was in front of him. Once there, I wrapped both arms around his waist and held him.

‘What’s happened?’

‘Sometime today, Dante took Giovanna.’ It was then I saw a look on Salvatore’s face that I’d only seen once before, in the aftermath of his nightmare I’d witnessed. He had been catapulted back into the four-year-old boy who had his mama snatched from his arms.

‘Took her?’
