His laughter filled the room. ‘Even a man like me. You have no idea who I am, and what I’m capable of, Serafina.’

‘You’re wrong, Salvatore. I recognise you.’ I knew my choice of words were dangerous, but carried on regardless even when I saw his jawline tense. If this was the one conversation we were to ever have, I needed to make it count. ‘I know precisely who you are and what you’re capable of. I know this because you might have thought you wanted to witness my family’s pain the day Zeno died, and maybe in a small way you did, but really, Iknowyour first thought was to come and find me. Because you care about me. You never meant to, but you do.’ I was treading on unsteady ground, but now I’d started I couldn’t seem to stop. ‘With my brother’s dried blood on your fingers, you thought of nothing but holding me and giving me comfort. Somewhere along the path you and I walked together, I got under your skin when I wasn’t meant to.’

‘You can’t know that.’ His voice deepened as he tried to convince me I was wrong.

‘But I do. You may not see it yet, but I can.’ I could see the hesitancy in his face, and I was certain that not many people, if any, would have witnessed the same thing. My husband only ever gave off the vibe that he was completely in control of himself and everyone around him. It was powerful to understand that I, as a sixteen-year-old woman, seemed to be the chink in his heavy-duty armour. ‘The cookies you brought me at the beach. They were homemade, at a guess I’d say they were your grandmother’s recipe. Am I right?’

His eyes narrowed, giving me his silent reply.

‘It was completely unnecessary to share something so personal with me. But you did… because it gave you pleasure to watch me eat them. You enjoyed being with me as much as I enjoyed being with you.’

I watched as he closed his eyes slowly and shook his head at me. I knew he was finally listening and carried on.

‘Tell me what I’m saying isn’t true, Salvatore.’

‘Little bird.’ He released his name for me on a sigh and he didn’t need to say anymore, in those two words he’d proved to me that I was right.

‘Whether you like it or not, I know you, Salvatore, because you mistakenly let me in andinis exactly where I’m staying.’

Salvatore’s eyes opened wide. His anger had gone. The hatred in his eyes had been replaced with his widening amber flecks, making his eyes look as though they’d caught alight. He took another step towards me, seemingly unable to keep away.

‘I can’t offer you love,’ he warned.

‘I didn’t ask for your love… all I want is you.’

‘My life is already mapped out. I will revenge my mama and one day I will step up as head of my family.’

‘By your side I can help you.’

‘An answer for everything, Serafina.’

‘I’ve been told that all my life… but never has it seemed more important than now.’ I shook my head at him and bit into my bottom lip, to stop the shiver I’d just experienced as my emotions began to get the better of me.

I’d never begged for anything in my life, but I was willing to fall to my knees if I felt it would help.

‘You don’t know what you’re asking of me.’ He shook his head.

‘You are with me in every minute of every day and have been for as far back as I can remember… God help me, but I want to be your wife… and not just on a piece of paper. I know what I’m asking. I want you to take my virginity. I want you to show me how you like to be touched.’ I heard the nerves in my voice and all but forced the next few words out. ‘I want you to make me yours in every sense of the word.’

As his body tensed, I let my eyes run over the well-developed muscles in his arms as they pushed against the expensive fabric of his crisp, white shirt. Fleetingly, my eyes were distracted to the growing bulge at the front of his trousers. I had always known how beautiful Salvatore was. However, not until now, had I ever been quite so aware of his masculinity.

‘You are mine.’

‘I agree and now I want you to fuck me as yours.’

His posture stiffened and his nostrils widened as he drew in a sharp inhale.

‘Serafina De Luca, as my wife you are not to use that language. Do you understand me?’

I felt my cheeks heat up as I took in what he’d just said. I nodded just the once and as he still hadn’t taken hold of me, I continued, determined not to be put off.

‘You called me your wife; you do care.’

‘I care… but it’s not enough,’ he disagreed.

I watched as he shook his head at me, with a look on his face that said that he thought I was deluded.

‘You might not love me, Salvatore. Only you know the truth of that. Our story might not be the stuff romances are made from, youdohowever care for me and for now that’s enough.’
