Standing still, I watched as the fine specimen that was my husband moved away from me. I knew we had guests to greet, but it was all I could do not to run after him like a giddy schoolgirl.

As he reached the open bi-fold doors at the far end of the large hallway, he turned his head just the once and offered me a quick wink, and then shaking hands with a couple of men I didn’t recognise, I watched him disappear outside and into the bright sunlight.

With a wide smile stretched across my face, I looked quickly around as I searched the dwindling amount of people still inside for Maria. I knew after being instructed by my mum she would have everything in hand. Extra staff had been brought into the kitchen and we had vetted several staff to help wait on, but in my role as hostess I felt the need to check all was okay.

I had a premonition that today was going to be pivotal in mine and Salvatore’s future and I wanted to make sure that it went as smoothly as possible.

Kitchen. She’ll be there.

Following my gut feeling, I turned to the left and made my way to where I hoped I would find her.

Making my way underneath the staircase, the light of the sun disappeared for a few seconds and my eyes struggled to cope with the change. As my pupils began to dilate in response, I carried on taking the few steps I knew I needed to make, until unexpectedly I thudded into a large body.

‘Sorry.’ In a reflex response, I began to voice my apologies and although I knew the person that I’d inadvertently collided with couldn’t see me, I offered them a small apologetic smile.

As the stench of stale sweat hit my nostrils, the whole of my body reacted to the alarm going off inside my head. My skin instantly felt uncomfortable and my heart began to pound in panic, before an involuntary shiver travelled the length of my spine. Then the smell of nicotine and something else I had smelt back in the U.K. enveloped me.

Drugs.

He was fuelled by drugs.

Seriously?

So, that was how he believed he could possibly corner me, the wife of a De Luca, and get away with it.

Pathetic.

His closeness caused my stomach to revolt.

‘Well, well… who do we have here?’ Enzo teased.

I inhaled slowly as I willed my tense body to relax. I was a grown woman, and this was my home. I was also married to a man who would willingly kill him if he so much as touched me, let alone hurt me in any way, shape or form. I understood that we would have only minutes, maybe only seconds, before either Salvatore returned to find me or one of our bodyguards would be sent to look for me.

Not today of all days.

Trying to gain the upper hand, I spoke, ‘I’m so sorry, Uncle Enzo, I didn’t see you there.’ I took a step backwards trying to clear the feelings his presence was stirring up inside of me. Suddenly, I was that young girl again. The one who was hitting puberty and whom he abruptly had such an interest in, and my body reacted accordingly.

Why the hell are you lurking here, you sick bastard?

‘That’s okay, Serafina,’ he replied, using a voice that instantly had bile hitting the back of my throat. As my view became clearer, I watched as he grabbed at my elbows to pull me closer to him once again.

‘Let go,’ I warned, raising my voice, and hoping someone was near enough to hear me. But I saw that my demand had created no reaction from him when his tongue slipped out of his mouth to wet his lips.

‘That was an amazing act you put on out there… with him.’

‘With my husband?’ I questioned.

‘Yes, with that jumped up bastard.’ Vile smelling spittle left his mouth and just missed my face and I fought hard against my response to grimace, knowing instinctively that showing him how much he repulsed me would only stoke his enthusiasm.

‘My husband.’ I spoke the same words again, as I used them like a defensive shield.

‘The one who is coveting my place in this community and in bed with my woman.’ As he spoke, he started to grind his hips against me.

‘How dare you! I am a married woman and one who demands respect. How dare you touch me… I repeat… let me go!’ I swallowed deeply, trying to stop myself from retching.

Again, I felt the fat of his belly rub over my stomach and hips. All I could think was thank God he was too fat for me to feel what I was sure would be his erect dick, otherwise I might lose all my stomach contents.

Swiftly, I pulled one arm out of his hold and slapped across his blubbery feeling cheek with everything I could summon.
