‘You fucking slut!’ He recoiled in defence, grabbing hold of the skin I’d just smacked with all the strength I had inside me, and I watched the skin below his jowls as it wobbled in response.

While he was still reeling from the slap, I thrust my hand between my breasts and pulled out the knife I’d been concealing. Acting on impulse, I took a step towards him. I held the knife tightly and aimed the point directly at the fat on his neck, making him lift his chin in response.

It only took a millisecond for his shock at the situation and his fear of me to appear on his face. That fear empowered me and in turn it encouraged a part of me to rise to the surface. The same part of me I’d always worried was in my makeup. As his eyes opened wider and beads of sweat burst from his disgusting flesh, I saw his distress. Stimulated further by his horror, I closed the gap between us, until I had the blade pressing against his skin.

With our eyes boring into each other’s as he implored me not to strike, my hand began to shake as I struggled to contain my hatred and absolute conviction that his life needed to be ended, before he caused harm to anyone else.

Anyone else?

Oh, dear God!

Inside my head I was putting two and two together. My mind drifted back to my dead elder brother and the flick knife Enzo had given him so many years before. Was he the one, the one who sold women and children? The one who nurtured my brother to his demise?

End him.

My hand began to shake a little more at the restraint I was having to show, and I understood I had only seconds before he saw and mistook it for my own fear.

‘And here we have another Giordano child with a knife, Enzo… How does that make you feel?’ My voice was unrecognisable, even to me.

‘Don’t.’ A single word left his mouth as he stupidly began to shake his head, making the knife I was holding scratch his skin and blood appear.

‘Never, I repeat never, think you can touch me again.’ The words left me on an angry burst and for a few seconds, I struggled within myself not to plunge my arm forward.

No, not today.

A sense of calm washed over me, and my restraint returned.

Today was too important to both of our families to kill a Ferraro, even a depraved, sick bastard of one.

Dropping my arm, I returned the knife to its previous position. Then, turning as quickly as I could, I walked towards the sunlight and the footsteps that I was sure were my husband’s as he came back to find me.

‘It doesn’t matter. I wouldn’t put my cock inside you anyway. You’re used fucking goods. I prefer younger, tighter flesh.’

Disappointingly, I stalled, giving him a tell into how he made me feel. Although, I understood there and then that he’d just signed his own death warrant. My only response was to move even quicker towards the welcome footsteps.

‘Little bird?’ Salvatore’s welcome smile greeted me as I came out from the stairs and into the main corridor. With his arm extended I moved into his embrace, swathing myself in his cologne and the smell of his masculinity until the repugnant Enzo had been erased.

‘Are you well?’ he looked down questioningly at me.

‘I’m fine. A little nervous that’s all.’ I heard a quiet movement behind me and hoped Enzo had slunk away like the piece of scum he was.

‘Where did you go?’ he asked as we walked us out into the warmth of the sun and the people outside.

‘I was just looking for Maria in the kitchen. I wanted to check everything was okay.’ I hoped I’d put him off the scent that something was wrong.

‘Hmmm… well, don’t do it again. I missed you.’ His honesty floored me.

As we crossed the threshold of the building, I took one glance up at my husband before dropping my sunglasses down over my eyes.

‘I missed you too,’ I offered, before he pulled away from me to make his way to the group of men in the corner surrounding his grandfather.

‘Stay where I can see you,’ he offered over his shoulder, as he pushed his hands into his trouser pockets.

‘If you say please.’

I watched as he stopped all movement and in total awe, I focussed my everything on the way his fitted shirt stretched over his muscular body as he turned back to me.

‘The balcony is beginning to look liketheoption.’ His eyebrows rose in question and as his smile widened, I was unsure if I’d ever get used to this playful side of him.
