I hadn’t spoken to them in six years, and even before then our relationship had been rocky.

And that was putting it mildly.

I was going by a different name, working in a gallery that I knew they wouldn’t approve of. Not that they would have approved of any gallery. And it had been a long time since any of us had had a reason to so much as think of each other.

So, I didn’t know why they would be reaching out to me or trying to find me now.

Especially since, to find me they first had to care. Which we all knew they didn’t. And six years was enough time for us to all understand that memo.

They didn’t care.

I didn’t care.

And that was that.

I placed my key into the lock and turned it, walking into my small studio and then shutting the door behind me.

I had moved into this apartment five years ago, right after getting the job with Hugo. And it felt like home in a way that nowhere else ever had.

It was small, with my bed in one corner, a small sofa resting at the end in front of the TV that was mounted on the wall, a galley style kitchen with a small table just outside of it, and a decent sized bathroom.

But I did have a walk-in closet, so that was something.

The old, hardwood floors creaked as I walked across them, and I knew for a fact if I sat a pen on the floors, it would roll across them.

But I loved this place, with all of its faults and quirks.

I walked over to the small round table I had stuffed just outside of the kitchen and sat down.

With shaking hands, I unfolded the piece of paper and began skimming the words that it contained. Reaching the end, I breathed a sigh of relief just as a knock sounded from the door.

“Nell, it’s me,” Lex’s voice called from the other side of it. “Open up!”

I smiled as I pushed myself back to standing and crossed over to the door.

My best friend was standing on the other side when I pulled it open. Her short, blonde hair sticking up in all directions as if she’d just woken up. And judging by her pajamas and the pillow marks on her face, I likely wasn’t that far off.

“Doing alright, Sleeping Beauty?” I asked with a laugh, stepping back to let her walk past me.

“I took a nap after school, so sue me.” I could hear the eye roll in her voice as she strode past me toward the sofa, collapsing on it and kicking her slippered feet up on the arm rest.

“How did you even know I was home?” I asked, shaking my head as I shut the door again and latched it.

“I heard your door shut. It’s what woke me up, actually.” Lex paused for a minute, her eyes darting from me over to the table.

She spotted the folded-up piece of paper and raised her brows.

“So, you saw it then?” She cocked her head, and the decorative pillow she had it propped on pushed her short hair in all directions, causing even more disarray.

“Yep. Who do you think bought it? What do you think will change?”

“Hopefully not our rent.”

I nodded, walking back over to the table and picking it up. I smoothed out the paper and let my eyes skim over it again.
