I shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess that’s what I have to find out.”

CHAPTERTWENTY

BLAKE

I lookedout the window from the back seat of the town car, staring out at the massive Christmas Tree that adorned Rockefeller Center.

Its lights gleamed merrily, and I smiled at it.

It had officially been lit the day before, marking the official start of the Christmas season in New York City.

I hadn’t wanted to wait an entire week and a half to see Nell again. But I’d wanted to plan something special for her using one of her favorite things in the world.

Christmas.

And so, I’d had to wait until the lights had gone up.

Jeffers expertly navigated the New York Streets as we made our way to Queens on our way to pick up Nell for our date.

I flinched at the word, not sure if I should call it that or not. Although, I wasn’t really sure what else I possibly could call it.

I tried not to focus too much on semantics, especially as we got closer to her apartment building. My heart was thundering nervously in my chest when we pulled up to the curb of her building, and I climbed out.

Not allowing myself to overthink it, I marched forward and made my way to her front door.

She answered it before I’d barely had time to knock, pulling it open with a flourish.

Nell smiled at me the moment her eyes landed on me, and my stomach tied itself in knots.

What the fuck has gotten into me?I asked myself, hoping that my nerves weren’t showing as I smiled back at her.

She looked absolutely stunning, although that was to be expected, considering the fact that stunning was her default.

Her golden-red hair was pulled into a high ponytail, with curls falling gracefully down her back. She wore a camel-colored wool coat, and a beige scarf, all of it complementing her soft brown eyes.

“You look lovely,” I told her honestly, and a grateful look tugged up the corners of her lips once again.

“So do you,” she said, eyes roving over me from head to toe. When they landed back on my face, she waggled her eyebrows at me. “So, are you gonna tell me what you have planned for tonight?”

It was my turn to grin as I shook my head. I reached into my pocket, pulling out a blindfold.

“It’s a surprise,” I mock whispered as recognition washed over her beautiful face. “And I’d like to keep it that way as long as possible.”

I expected her to argue, to put up some kind of fight about me blindfolding her and taking her galavanting around the city. And I couldn’t stop the shock from coursing through me as her grin widened, and she reached forward, plucking the blindfold from my hand with slender fingers.

“Excellent,” she mused as she tugged it over her head.

I laughed. “You can get in the car first before you’re blindfolded.”

Nell shook her head. “Absolutely not. You said you wanted it to be a surprise for as long as possible. Well, how can it be as long as possible if you don’t start as soon as possible?”

“I can’t argue with that logic,” I chuckled and shook my head as I reached forward.

I grabbed her arm and looped it through mine before leading her down the stairs.

I tried not to focus on the proximity of our bodies as I did so, but the gentle brushes of her limbs against mine made that a little more difficult than I would have liked.

We made it to the car with only one minor stumble, and I helped instruct her on how to not hit her head as she climbed in.
