“Good evening, Miss Nell,” Jeffers said to the blindfolded woman as she situated herself in the back seat.

“Is that Jeffers?” She tittered excitedly.

“It is, ma’am. Nice to see you.”

“I told you not to call me ma’am,” Nell corrected. “But it’s nice to see you, too.”

“Yes ma’am,” Jeffers answered, and I didn’t miss his grin in the rearview mirror as I buckled both me and Nell in, and he pulled the car away from the curb. “But you can’t really see me.”

“Semantics,” she argued with the wave of a hand.

I shook my head at both of them while Jeffers shot me an amused look in the mirror before turning his attention back to the road.

He knew where we were headed, so I didn’t have to instruct him on where to go. I settled back into the seat, grabbing Nell’s hand and entwining our fingers.

A small thrill ran through me when she didn’t pull her hand back. There was a part of me that had been worried that what had occurred the night of the gala and the small gestures of affection would be a one-off.

I was glad to know that wasn’t going to be the case.

“How long until we get there?” Nell asked, practically vibrating with excitement, despite the fact that we had barely driven twenty feet from her apartment building.

I chuckled at her and patted her hand. “Patience, Princess. Patience.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-ONE

NELL

I was beginningto think that the word ‘patience’ might be my least favorite word in the English language. Though the way he called me Princess was definitely winning first place.

Blake was talking, prattling on about some project he and my brother were working on. I had technically asked him about it, needing some kind of chit-chat to fill the silence on our ride to wherever he was taking me.

But I wasn’t entirely paying attention.

Right turn, right turn, left turn.I recited in my head, trying to map out the city as we drove, making every attempt I could to figure out where we were headed.

Was it a fool’s errand? Most definitely. But I was too excited to know what he had planned.

“Are you even listening?” Blake’s voice cut through my mental mapping session, and I could hear the amusement laced in it.

I gave his hand a quick, tight squeeze as I grinned in what I was pretty sure was his direction. “Not even a little bit.”

He chuckled, and I imagined that he shook his head. But I couldn’t be sure. I don’t know where he got this blindfold from, but it was pretty heavy-duty.

Only the faintest bit of light leaked in through the bottom, where my cheekbones provided a small gap between the fabric and my face. It wasn’t a big enough gap for me to make out anything, though, much to my disappointment. But I’d be a liar if I didn’t say the thought of this blindfold making a reappearance later in the night for us hadn’t crossed my mind.

“Luckily for you,” Blake said as the car crawled to a stop, “we’re here.”

It took everything in me not to reach up and immediately rip the fabric off my face.

Blake used my hand to guide me out of the car, instructing me where to step so that I made it onto the sidewalk.

The sound of the city rose up to greet me.

The honking of horns, people talking. Somewhere not too far off, the sound of live music filled the air.

“Are you ready?” Blake asked, and I could hear the smile in his voice.

“Blake, if you don’t take this blindfold off of me right now, I might actually explode.”
