They didn’t even make it past the first ring of chairs before Mikey announced proudly to Josie that “Elio is gonna be my Papa now.”
There was the expected uproar of cheers and whistles. James’s cheeks were pink, but he took it all in stride. It was a long time before they managed to take their seats, and then Mikey planted himself firmly on Elio’s lap. He was probably getting too big for that, but Elio would never push him away. On the contrary, he was going to hold all three of them as close as he could, for the rest of their lives.
Elio looked around at all the smiling faces, lit by the flickering flames. He hadn’t known what he was looking for when he offered to help an adorable, bumbling dad set up a tent last year, but he knew what he’d found.
