I’d thought I’d been in a happy marriage. With the stress of being Captain of the Homicide and Cold Case Units, the one happy moment I had at the end of the day was coming home to my husband to leave it all behind. That was until the divorce papers came, and I fell victim to the curse of a lot of law enforcement officers, a failed marriage. Someone suggested volunteering, and that had me headed to Winston Harbor’s Outreach program.

At the age of forty, I’d lost my husband. He’d been my everything for almost two decades. Three years later, I was trying to find myself. Then an old friend asked me to come run the support groups for him at his Outreach program. That led to a zip code change and back to the city I swore I’d never live in again. After a grief support group one night, I ran into a stranger with too much pain in his eyes, and I was suddenly terrified.

The day before, my office door had flown open and one of my Cold Case Detectives busted in. Remy was a menace in a six-and-a-half-foot husky body. His smile was one of absolute mischief. How his Daddy put up with him, I didn’t know. Although, Robert was as obsessed with him as Remy was with his husband. The thought had brought the crushing realization that I was a man in his fifties who was single again.

The divorce had come out of nowhere. I hadn’t seen it coming in any way. A year had passed, and nothing had changed about the pain. It was there when I woke up to find the spot beside me on the bed empty and cold. I wouldn’t even bother to make breakfast or coffee, just grabbed something on my way to work. Other than work, my husband and boy had been my sole purpose, and I’d given him everything he needed. What hurt was he hadn’t bothered to explain what I’d done so wrong.
