As he did, I hugged his waist to lift him off his feet and carried him through our home to the living room. I sat down and arranged him on my lap to cuddle him. It was how I loved to end every day. Cass always said I made everything safe for him. Gave him what he needed to relax and just breathe. But he also did the same for me.

I chuckled as he told me another Bart and Chance story. Those seemed to be his favorites. Then he told me about something the kids in the daycare program did that he found cute, and about a moment when one of his patients had a breakthrough and how he was proud of them. I never got details, only that they’d come so far.

That’s what I loved the most about my boy; how much he cared about everyone he came into contact with. He was always animated, talking with his hands and expressive. In our home, I was never Captain Tyson, the man who was supposed to fix everything. Not that I didn’t try, especially when it came to making my boy happy. My only goal in life was to make him always want to gift me with his smile.

“You had a full day, and I have a surprise for you.” A rumbling laugh built as he jumped up to reposition himself to straddle my thighs.

“What is it? You know how much I love surprises.”

“I put in for some time off. Two weeks. Vacation starts on the first. I thought maybe you’d like to go somewhere just to unplug for a bit.”

“Really?” he questioned breathlessly. I tried to take personal days when I could, even a few short vacations. He didn’t like to leave the Outreach without him, but we both needed couple-time when neither of our phones rang in the middle of the night.

“Yeah, anywhere you want to go. Whatever you want to do. My baby’s choice.” I tucked his long hair behind his ears.

“Well, I’ve been thinking about talking you into going off-grid.”

“Boy, I love you more than anything, but off-grid for you is full amenities.” I kissed his adorable pout. “You told me we were going camping, and we ended up in a designer tent with people bringing us three meals a day.”

“You had fun. And we stayed naked all four days.”

“I’m all for my boy naked twenty-four hours a day.”

“Leave it to me, Daddy. I’ll make sure it’s perfect.”

“Baby, as long as I’m with you, every day is perfect.” His cheeks turned the prettiest shade of pink, and I slanted my mouth across his.

As I pushed up from the couch, he wrapped his slender legs around my waist. I carried him to our room. I’d spent too much time being jaded, tied to my job, but I had something more important now. Cass was all I needed, and I’d make sure I was always the Daddy he deserved.
