“I’m beginning to think this was a bait and switch,” Ares murmured drily.

“I think he’s going to propose,” I breathed the words for only Ares to hear. My lips parted in anticipation. In hope.

Lucky looked up at Ares, his face panicked. “I don’t know where she could have put it. I just gave it to her.”

Minty leaned forward and put her hand on Brayleigh’s jewel case on the coffee table. “Is my gift in here, Dolly?”

Brayleigh’s lips pursed into a pout. “Me a big girl.”

Minty laughed and looped her arm around Brayleigh, turning her little body toward her. “You are a big girl. Would you like one like mine?”

She nodded. “Brayleigh love Sparklies.”

“You do,” Minty hugged her close for a moment before releasing her. “We’ll get you one, too. Is mine in here?” Minty asked again, tapping Brayleigh’s jewel case.

Brayleigh nodded slowly.

“Do you want to get it for me?”

Brayleigh flipped the lid open.

A bead of sweat rolled down the side of Lucky’s face.

I held my breath.

Brayleigh closed her little fist around something in her case and turned to Minty, dropping it into her hand.

Minty gasped, her eyes immediately filling with tears. “Lucky,” she whispered.

Lucky blew out a relieved breath and wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. Rising to one knee, he reached for her left hand. “You’ll make me the luckiest man in the world if you say yes. Will you marry me, Minty?”

I briskly swiped the tears from under my eyes. My chest heaved. I covered my mouth. Something between a bark and a snort escaped through my fingers.

Lucky’s attention remained rapt on Minty’s face as she stared down at the ring he held between his fingers, waiting for her answer.

“Are you sure, Lucky?” Her voice quavered.

“Never been more certain of anything in all my life,” he answered seriously. “Say yes.”

“Okay, Captain. Yes,” she hiccupped daintily.

I choked on my tears.

Lucky glanced and me and laughed as he leapt to his feet and took his fiancé in his arms.

“I have one, too?” Brayleigh asked.

“Uh…” Lucky rubbed his hand over the back of his neck.

Minty leaned into his chest and smiled into his eyes. “We’ll get her a cubic zirconia, Captain.”

“Captain?” Ares asked.

Lucky preened, puffing out his chest.

Minty crinkled her nose.

I yelled, “Don’t ask!”
