“She told you over email?” She snorted. “Chicken-shit.”

I laughed out loud.

After a second, she joined me.

“You’ve got the best laugh.”

“Thank you for calling, Jaycie. It means the world to me.”

“Um, that’s not the only reason I called. Do you want to get together?”

I blinked. “Get together?”

“Yeah,” she laughed. “Get together. Have coffee with me, Sunny, Tilda, and Isabel. We want to pitch an idea to you.”

“When?”

“You’re not by any chance available this morning? We already have plans to meet at The Mulberry Place Cafe.”

“What time?”

I left the girls two hours later with a smile in my heart. It turned out they’d been chatting about alternatives for quite some time. With my vote, it would have been a tie.

How did I choose the wrong three women to email?

I assumed Sunny would be a hard ass about practice, so I immediately ruled her out. Jaycie hadn’t been with the group that long. I didn’t even think to contact her. Isabel and Tilda were quiet and kept to themselves for the most part.

Most of our coffee date revolved around Sunny’s love woes. I might have cracked a rib laughing.

Slipping behind the wheel of my car, I headed over to Lucky’s, calling my mom on the way.

“Hi, peaches. Are you okay? How’d it go?”

For once, understanding from where her anxiety stemmed, it didn’t irritate me. “It was great! I nearly peed my pants, we laughed so hard.”

“Yeah?”

I could hear the delight in my mom’s voice. “Yup! So, they want to stick with me but with a few changes.”

“I didn’t know you were going to try to keep up the group.”

Laughter bubbled up in my chest. “Neither did I. Wait til you hear…”

I filled her in, and she was as excited as I was. She even offered to take on the administration duties.

“You know, I used to do it all the time for your dance school. It would be easy for me.”

Even over the phone, I could tell she held her breath.

“That would be great, Mom. It’s my least favorite part of running the group.”

“Yeah? Oh, that’s excellent! I’m so happy!”

She was back in my corner.

And I was in hers.

I practically danced up Lucky’s front path.
