I turned off the ignition.

Silence.

Inside my car, wrapped in the night, the snow outside insulating me from the rest of the world.

I could no longer ignore my thoughts.

Why didn’t he tell me he was coming home?

Was he upset about the changes I made in his house? I winced and covered my mouth with my fingers. That was so fucking presumptuous. What did I think I was doing? You can’t just walk into someone else’s house with a hammer!

I ran a hand down the side of my face.

My car door swung open.

I screamed and threw myself across the center console to the passenger seat.

“Hope!” he barked. “Hope, it’s just me. Come here, baby,” he cajoled. “I’m so sorry.”

My heart, that had already been beating like a drum, now River Danced across the dashboard.

I glared at him and slapped my hand over my chest. “Fuck. Me. Ares.”

“I intend to, but you’ve got to get out of the car first, and we need to talk.” He eyed me with concern, though his face remained carefully blank.

“Huh,” I grunted. Amazed I could read his expressions. I snickered. His not expressions.

His mouth quirked. “Are you quietly losing your mind in there?”

“Maybe,” I answered softly, my eyes eating up his face. “I missed you,” I sniffed as fresh tears sprang to my eyes.

His face softened. “Pass me your bag, Hope.”

He took my bag, then held out his hand and pulled me from the car.

I stared up at him mutely.

He pulled me close. With his arm around my back, he searched my eyes. “It’s cold. Let’s get you into the house.”

I followed behind him, clinging to his hand.

I couldn’t think through the haze of emotions.

Anger I didn’t realize I harbored began to boil.

He chuckled in front of me. “I can feel your anger. You’ve got every right to be angry. Let’s just get inside first.”

In the front hall, he gently eased my heavy winter coat from my shoulders and hung it up.

Coming face-to-face with the newly framed picture wall, well, one of them, my anger flagged. I slowly turned to face him, my bottom lip caught in my teeth, and smiled at him tentatively.

He smiled down at me. “I love it.”

I breathed a sigh of relief.

His twinkling eyes traveled down the length of my body then back up. “That’s quite the outfit you’ve got going on.”

I wore the filmy pink negligee he requested over the trackpants I’d practically lived in for the past three weeks.
