Hope and I turned as one to see Brayleigh struggling to free herself from Lucky’s tight hold.

Minty lay a soothing hand at her back. “Because Ares just gave her a big shiny ring just like your daddy gave me.”

Brayleigh’s blond brows lowered ominously. “When I getting a big, shiny, sparky?”

Lucky grinned and set her to her feet. Nudging her toward me, he said, “Go ask Ares.”

She wasted no time. With her palm slapped over her chest, she stepped up to me and demanded, “When I getting a big shiny?”

I pulled a tiny, flat box from my jacket and showed it to her before opening it.

I shook my head at the sound of Hope’s choked snort and focussed on Brayleigh.

“What do you think?”

She slapped her hands over her face, her tiny mouth a perfect ‘O’. Exactly like her mama.

“That mine big shiny?”

Even as she asked, she nipped the ‘big shiny’ out of the box and worked the gold bangle over her hand.

Between Minty and Hope, she had more experience with jewelry than most grown women.

With a solitary white sapphire set in the middle, it looked like a supersized engagement ring. I hoped it would be enough.

“Mine so big,” she breathed.

Hope laughed, fisting my shirt in her hand.

I smiled down at her. “I had no idea you would be such a cry-baby,” I teased.

“I’m not. Not usually,” she protested, then the waterworks began again. “I’m just so happy.”

Lucky guffawed. “That or pregnant.”

Hope’s smile teetered.

Alert, I watched her gaze drop. She stared into space, her eyes skittering back and forth.

Lucky laughed.

Hard.

Minty shushed him.

Brayleigh tugged at my hand.

I looked down.

My head spun.

Brayleigh pointed to Sia in the highchair beside us. “Her need a big shiny, too.”

I smiled weakly.

Turned back to Hope.

Slowly, she turned to face me.
