Theo peeked around the corner and caught us laughing. His face lit like a beacon, and he puffed out his chest. “I’m not that good, yet, but there’s potential!” He stated proudly.

He already caught me laughing. The gig was up. I smiled back. “Show me.”

Lightning, in her cage, was exhibited first.

“She’s purple,” I said worriedly. “I’m not sure that’s safe, Theo.”

“I did my research. Brayleigh helped me.”

My eyes flew up to find Brayleigh doing her best imitation of innocent. “He said he was concerned for the pets on the show, so I looked it up for him.”

Theo pressed his lips together, looking so much like his father in that moment that I fell just a little bit further in love with both of them.

“I want to see what you used later. Okay?”

He smiled excitedly, yelling as he bounded out of the room. “Are you ready for the next one?”

“I don’t think so,” I whispered.

Ares reached for my hand. Brought my knuckles to his lips and brushed the softest of kisses over them.

Brayleigh brought Skamper, our Bichon, in next. His legs and ears were dyed black, turning him into an approximation of a tiny panda bear.

“Oh!” I exclaimed, shocked by the change, then impressed. “Skamper doesn’t look too bad, baby!”

Theo pumped his fist in victory and called his sisters into our bedroom. Sia called Digger, our fluffy, long-legged, lab-husky mix, prodding her into our bedroom.

I gasped.

Ares ducked his head.

Theo pressed his lips together, his dark eyes flying up to meet mine before dancing away again. “Digger turned out the worst. And I think he knows. Somehow.”

Digger did indeed have the look of someone who found themselves naked in a public place.

“He was supposed to look like a lion.”

Completely shaved, save for his head and the tip of his tail, I had no words. I also had no idea how small he was under all his fur. “Okay,” I replied weakly.

Once released, Digger bounded onto my reading chair by the window and sat looking out. His head enormous.

I looked at Ares. “I can’t.”

He broke. “I know.”

Brayleigh carried in the cats. Only the tips of their ears were dyed. They had excellent self-preservation skills. I could live with that.

Putting them down, they darted away from Theo as fast as their legs could carry them.

He looked at me sheepishly. “We haven’t quite made up yet.”

All three children stood staring at me. Their eyes huge.

“Oh no. How bad is it?”

Sia grimaced.

Brayleigh assured me, “It will grow.”
