Theo explained, “I wanted her to be super fancy. Like her name.”

“Go get her,” I ordered, and all three scampered out.

“How is this a three-person job?” I muttered.

“No one wants to be alone with you right now.” Ares laughed then turned serious. “I told them to keep her in her crate until I could talk to you.”

“It’s bad,” I stated.

“So bad.” Ares broke down. “I feel terrible. Truly terrible. But I can’t stop laughing.”

Three sets of feet padded back down the hallway to our room.

My mouth fell open.

Minty’s tiny rescue, appropriately named Fancy, sported a hot pink mohawk from the top of her tiny head to the base of her tail. The fur on the rest of her body was cut short save for a matching pink plume on the tip of her now nearly hairless tail. A ridiculously short fringe drew unnecessary attention to her unfortunately goggly eyes, and her tiny nails flashed with pink sparkles.

“She’s going to kill me,” I said to Theo, then pointed at him and yelled through my laughter. “She’s going to kill you!”

Putting the little dog down carefully, Theo bounded onto our bed, throwing himself down between us, his big brown eyes looking to both of us. “I’ve got potential, though, right?”

The girls flopped down on the bottom, grinning at each other. Sia scooped Fancy up onto the bed. Skamper leapt up on his own.

“You’re such an athlete!” Brayleigh cooed as he circled into a donut in her lap.

I took another bite of my syrup-soaked pancakes and smoothed the unruly black curls off Theo’s forehead.

“Yes, my love. You’ve got great potential. But Aunt Minty is going to have a heart attack. You might want to get your first aid training before we show Fancy to her.”

“And take a self-defence class,” Ares added.

“Aw, it’ll be okay,” Theo said nonchalantly and climbed off the bed. “Anyway, I already called her. She’s on her way over.”

Ares and I sat up straight, staring at each other with wide eyes.

“I’m getting in the shower,” I yelled. “Go to Sweet Paradise.”

Ares yanked on a t-shirt and pulled his jeans up over his boxers. “What should I get?”

I looked back over my shoulder.

Theo lay on the floor, the dogs sniffing and snuffling around him. The girls sat on the bed, planning to give Minty a manicure.

Poor woman.

Ares, tall, strong, and healed, smirked at me from across the chaos.

Nothing I wanted more than to climb back under the covers with that delicious man. I shook my head and smiled at the miracle that was our life.

He mouthed the words he adopted long ago to describe the beauty of us.

“Buy out the whole store.” I ducked into the bathroom then scooted back out. “And buy her a gift card!”

Once again, I ducked into the bathroom only to pop back out.

I turned my attention to my girls. “Girls, go get one of Skamper’s tracksuits and put it on Fancy. It’ll lessen the shock.”

And Minty would be shocked.
