But not mad.

She never got mad at the kids.

Besides, she owed me for dragging us to the animal shelter fundraiser run by her friend. The same fundraiser that resulted in my house being overrun by animals for the past five years.

Brayleigh and Theo followed Sia, who still cuddled Fancy, out the door, the three of them planning how they would showcase Theo’s ‘skills’ to warm Minty up before she saw Fancy.

I scooped my cell off the dresser and pulled up Minty’s name.

She’d come to mean so much to me over the years. A second mother to all my children, though only Brayleigh called her Mom. Sia and Theo called her Minnie. Not sure how that happened. And I called her the sister of my heart.

Me: You know how you owed me for instigating all the furry chaos I live with?

Minty: What happened? LOL. What did the devil-child do? I can’t wait to see!

Me: Suffice it to say, your debt is paid in full.

I snickered to myself, loving the chaos that was my life.

Ares’ hand snaked behind my neck, his purposeful hold never failing to turn my knees to water.

I tipped my chin back.

Where I expected to find laughter, I found the reflected echo of his pain.

“Thank you,” he murmured, pressing his mouth to mine.

I smiled softly. “For what, hot stuff?”

“Sweet Everythings.”

The End.

Thank you!

Chapter One-Promises

Ruby

“Promise me,” he urged, his face tipped down, dark eyes searching mine. “Promise me you’ll think this through. It doesn’t have to be over.”

Standing in the circle of his arms, I nodded, though I had no intention of doing what he asked. For the past several weeks, I’d thought about little else, and could see no alternative for us.

My grandfather, my pappou, was gone, and I’d made the only decision I could for my family. Better that Vander leaves now, while he still loved me. Better now than later, when what we have becomes a burden, and his eyes reflect resentment instead of love.

I gathered up the tattered remains of my resolve and moved closer to him within the circle of his arms, pressing my forehead to his lips. “Vander, I love you,” I whispered. “But you have to go.”

Six weeks had passed since my pappou had collapsed.

Five weeks and six days since Vander dropped me off at the airport in British Columbia.
