“Is she for real?” Hope whispered.

My lips quirked. “Despite the vast amounts of silicone injections, she is indeed very real. And could cause you very real problems. We do not mess with those with deep pockets.”

Her face soured. “Don’t even go there. My boss is a total letch and it’s entirely due to his deep pockets that we, meaning the female employees, must tolerate it.”

“Ratcliffe?”

She nodded. “Ratface.”

My lips twitched but I quelled my smile. “You have a point. His face is decidedly rat like.”

What kinds of things was he doing? What exactly did Hope mean by tolerate?

“What does he do?”

“I’ll give you a demonstration at the hotel. It’s hard to explain. It’s the wording he uses in combination with his body language. The words alone are not enough.” She twisted in her seat to face me, her eyes bright. “What did you do this week?”

I shriveled beneath her curious gaze. “Work.”

“What kind of work?”

I looked at her pointedly. “I take pictures.”

Her hopeful smile dropped. She tapped the bow of her pretty mouth with her index finger. “I think I might have been better off with the old battle-axe.”

“Why don’t you read your book?” I nodded to the book sticking out of her bag.

“Well, this one’s not as good as the one you stole.”

“It was good,” I agreed. “Spicy.” That should keep her quiet.

Her mouth dropped open, and her cheeks flushed pink. “You read it?”

“You have interesting taste in literature.” I opened my own book. One that was decidedly less spicy.

For a solid minute, she stared out the window.

I began to relax, thinking the rest of the trip would be peaceful with the added bonus that I didn’t have to keep an eye on her seatmate if she fell asleep.

Abruptly, she turned back to me and stated, “You read it.”

“Yes. I said that I read it.”

“All of it?”

I met her eyes and barely controlled my smirk. “All of it.”

Her blue eyes rounded. She breathed, “What did you think?”

“It was… engaging.” I lifted my drink and took a healthy sip, knowing what she really wanted to ask, further sure she wouldn’t dare.

“Like… pants getting tight engaging?”

I choked on my drink, set it down quickly, and covered my mouth with my napkin.

Twisting around to face me, she patted my back with a wide grin on her face. “You okay there, Hitman?”

I narrowed my eyes on her face. “That is not my name, blondie.”
