I followed her down the hall to the family room.

She tossed her coat over a chair and my eyes ate her up. No make-up, ponytail twitching with agitation, slouchy, ancient trackpants, and an oversized sweatshirt.

Her beauty overwhelmed me.

I swallowed against the pain of my loss knowing this way was better for her. Content with the knowledge I’d done something significant to improve her life.

“Who’s here?” she snapped as she moved closer, an almost violent energy vibrating off her in waves.

“Anastasia.”

She paced back and forth in front of me, her angry eyes narrowed on my face.

“Melissa?” she gritted through her teeth.

“Moved out.” I swallowed as she nodded to herself, seemingly carrying on an internal conversation to which I was not privy.

Her ponytail swung back and forth. Cheeks flushed, eyes flashing, she trembled.

I had to try to make this better. “Hope-”

She cut me off. “Where’s Sia?”

“She’s sleeping.”

She walked to the far side of the room. Stood with her back to me, hands on her hips.

My eyes dropped to her butt. I could not help but smile. A faded ‘juicy’ splayed across her round cheeks.

She spun around abruptly, and I immediately wiped the smile from my face.

Looking me in the eye, she seemed to come to a verdict. She didn’t even give me a chance to defend myself.

I opened my mouth to protest but shut it just as quickly as she whipped her sweatshirt up over her head.

My eyes dropped to her chest and watched her hungrily as she pushed her trackpants down her legs, tucked her fingers into her socks, and stepped out of both.

Frozen, I stared.

Long, shapely legs. Generous hips. Her expressive hands moved to cover the gentle slope of her tummy and trailed upwards over her ribs to cup her breasts lightly before moving to flick open the enclosure between her breasts.

Peeling the cups away, she dropped her arms and let her bra fall to the floor.

I stood mute before the goddess, and she wasn’t finished yet.

With her thumbs hooked into the sides of her panties, she tugged them down as well, then stepped away from the pile of clothing at her feet.

My greedy eyes zeroed in on her mound and saliva pooled in my mouth. “Hope…” My voice guttural, I tore my eyes from her body and looked at her face.

Vulnerability.

Fear.

Hope.

Challenge.

And something else I could not identify.
