I Love You

SABRINA

What’s that beeping? I try to open my eyes. They feel so heavy. Is that Chloe crying? I want to tell her I’m okay, but my mouth is so dry. I give it another go, and this time succeed in opening my eyes fully. The light is too much, and I groan.

“Baby.” It’s Alex. I turn my head to the side to see him bending over me, brushing his lips over mine.

“Alex,” I croak.

“Don’t talk. Your vocal cords are bruised,” he tells me. “We’re all here.”

I look around to see Chloe on the other side, gently lifting my hand to her lips and kissing it. Next to her is Damian, who looks like he’s ready to drop from exhaustion. Caleb and Zeke are at the end of the bed. Both men seem like they’re ready to rip someone to shreds.

When I look back at Alex, I can see that he’s barely holding it together. I’ve seen that look before. The last time I saw it was when he found out my ex-boyfriend was back and planning to kidnap me. That was a disastrous situation, and thanks to these men and Chloe, Cameron is behind bars for a very long time.

I’m okay,I mouth.

“You’re not, but you will be. I’m getting this guy, buttercup. You’re going to breathe easy. I promise you.”

It takes effort, yet I manage to lift my hand to touch his cheek. He bends to lean into it.

“Come closer,” I say, my words barely audible. He leans in, and his beautiful eyes lock with mine. “I love you.”

He rests his forehead against mine and takes a deep breath. “I know, and I’m gone for you. I would kiss you the way I want, but you’re hurting, and the next time I kiss you, and I mean really kiss you, it’s going to be without pain.”

He moves away, and I glance around to see that everyone’s left the room. Alex insists that I close my eyes and get some rest.

I must have drifted off into a deep sleep, because the next time I awaken, it’s dark outside and Caleb and Alex are talking in the corner of the room.

“We have to talk to her, man. You know as well as I do the longer we wait, the colder the trail gets. It’s gonna suck, but Sabrina has to share what happened,” Caleb says.

“It’s too soon,” Alex argues.

“Alex—”

“She went through hell.Hell!” He raises his voice, then goes back down to a low tone. “You want to make her relive that?”

“I don’t want to. It’s the last thing I want to do, but she may be able to give us what we need to get this guy,” Caleb insists.

“She can’t talk.”

“I can whisper,” I finally say.

“Bri—” Alex starts.

“Have to find him,” I respond.

Caleb comes over to the bed, Alex on the other side. Caleb’s the first to speak. “We’ll go slow. If you need to stop, we’ll stop. Okay?”

I nod.

“This is what we know so far. You were on the phone with Chloe. A man came up behind you and grabbed you,” Caleb says.

“I tried to get away. He hit me.” I point to the lump on my head. “Out cold.”

“Can you tell me what happened next?” Caleb asks.
