“Cameron did all this with one call. I want five minutes with the bastard.” Chloe stands, then stomps around the room.

“Get in line.” I get up too. “Checking on Bri. I’ll be back.”

Sabrina

I needa few more minutes to compose myself. I splashed some cool water on my face and changed into some cozy sweats, and decide to sit on the bed, legs crossed, and just breathe it out. I know my initial reaction was normal. My counselor said that I would have triggers, and Cameron is the biggest of them all. Hearing his voice made me go numb. I couldn’t think straight.

“Hey, buttercup, you up for company?” Alex cracks open the door, poking his head in.

“Yeah.”

He climbs onto the bed and pulls me close. “How’re you doing? That was a nasty surprise.” He brushes the top of my head with his lips.

“That’s an understatement,” I say, bending my head back and meeting his eyes. “It took me right back to that scared little girl I used to be. I couldn’t stop shaking. The first thing I thought about was running.”

“Don’t leave without me. Where you go, I go,” he replies with a small smile. I try to smile back, but can’t.

“I’ve worked so hard to pull my life back together. I have friends and a great job, and I’m feeling better about my family. I was even thinking to go home for a visit. But now… I just can’t. I can’t bring this mess to their doorstep.”

“You’re not a mess. The situation will be dealt with, and we’ll both go visit your parents,” he says. “Parents love me.”

This time, I manage a tiny smile, then say, “What if Cameron’s not bluffing?”

“We’ve got a plan in play. You’re not alone anymore. Zeke’s already doing his thing. Caleb’s so mad, he called the warden directly and has a meeting set up for the morning. Damian and I are making sure you always stay safe. And Chloe, well, that girl’s not going to let you out of her sight. I have no idea how Damian’s going to get her to go home.”

“You all have jobs—”

“Yeah, got that covered too. There’s a buddy of Damian’s who’s ex-military. He’s going to be your shadow when we’re not around. His name is Mason, and he’s dropping by in a while. You should meet him, get comfortable around him.”

“Like a bodyguard?”

“Yeah, but more. Mason is ex-special forces. I trust Damian, and if he says this guy is solid, I believe him.”

“Okay.” I sigh, then say, “We should get back out there.”

“No rush.”

“If only we could stay in this room, cuddled together just like this forever, I’d be happy.”

“You were happy this morning. And you can be again. Don’t give him that power, Sabrina. He preys on fear. He instills it and feeds off it. Fight back. Take your power back,” he says with passion.

“I want to.”

“You’re afraid. I know. But lean on me. Lean on us. Don’t get sucked into the dark place. You’re stronger than that. I know you are.”

I entwine my fingers with his. “I’ll fight.”

Alex gives us a little longer before he leads me back to the living room to find that Caleb’s arrived with food. Coming in behind him is another man.

Damian steps forward to make introductions. “Everyone, this is Mason.” Damian and Mason both walk toward Alex and me. “This is Sabrina, and you’ve met Alex.”

Alex steps forward, and they give each other a manly hug, slapping each other’s backs. Mason extends a hand to me. “Please to meet you, Sabrina.” This man is beautiful, with dark skin and dark eyes that make him more mysterious looking. He’s as tall as Alex, and I can tell that he works out a lot. The scar over his right eye only makes him more attractive and interesting.

“Hi. Nice to meet you.”

“You have good instincts. You saw my car today. I had to think fast.” He smiles, showing us his pearly whites.
