She was quiet for a few moments. “We should stay in touch with him.”

“We really should. He’s done very well for himself.”

We laid together on the roof that had become our favorite place to hang out in silence, just watching the stars above us.

I don’t know how long we were out there, but just as we’d decided it was time to leave a sudden burst of light appeared above us, and we watched in amazement as a meteor blazed across the sky, leaving sparks of light in its wake.

Emilia clutched at my arm in excitement. “A shooting star! I can’t believe it.”

I didn’t respond. I couldn’t. What were the odds that the one night we were on this very rooftop, a shooting star would dance across the sky in front of our eyes?

So many emotions flowed through me, but only one dominated. “I love you, Emilia. You know that, right?”

She looked at me, her smile lighting up her face. “Yes, I know that. I love you, too.”

Our kiss was deep and passionate. Something broke inside me, a wall I’d had around my heart for as long as I could remember. Emilia melted all my defenses and being with her in this moment, her mouth on mine, finally made me acknowledge what I’d known deep down all along.

I was in love with my best friend.

But here and now was not the time to be making any sort of declarations, so once we separated I stood and held out my hands to her, pulling her to her feet.

“We should make a move, Ty’s waiting for us.”

She nodded without replying but kept hold of my hand as we went back into the house, the meteor no longer visible above us.
