“Fine, I didn’t ask you here to talk about Duncan.”

“Then why did you ask me here?” I shot up out of my seat and almost fell over again. Dizziness swamped me and I swayed in place. “What the fuck have you done to me?”

Harlow stood and came over to me, wrapping her fingers around my arm as I swayed again. “Slipped a little something in your drink. Don’t worry, it won’t kill you, unfortunately. Will just put you to sleep long enough for us to get you out of here.”

“Us?”

The door opened and a man I’d never seen before entered the room. He was dark-haired, tall, and wide, built like a linebacker. “Who are you?”

He merely grunted at me, and Harlow let out a delighted laugh. “Don’t worry about him, he’s just the hired muscle. You’re too fat for me to carry anywhere.”

“Fuck you, bitch.” I swung a hand out toward her in an attempt to slap her face, but missed her completely.

My vision started to fade and my stomach ached as nausea washed over me. Whatever drug she’d laced my wine with was acting fast. Fuck. Now I knew why she’d had her back to me while pouring our drinks.

Her grip on my arm tightened painfully. “Sit down before you fall down.”

“No.” I tried to shake off her grip but didn’t have the energy to do so. “Why are you doing this?”

“Because you’ve got something I want.” Her tone was nasty. “And more precisely, someone I want. And you, dear Emilia, are not going to get in the way of me getting it. And him.”

I tried hard to focus my attention on her. The words she’d just sneered at me penetrated my brain, and one in particular stuck. “Someone?”

“Jason.”

She didn’t get to say anything more before I fell back down into the chair. I saw her nod at the large guy near the door and he came over to me, scooping me up into his arms. I tried to struggle, to lash out at him, but my body wouldn’t obey the command. “Put me down right now!”

He merely gave me an amused grin and waited for Harlow. She dug through my purse, obviously looking for something in particular. When she found it, she held up my phone triumphantly. “We’ll be needing this. Got any naked photos of Jason on it? I’d love to see them.”

I tried desperately to hold up my hand and raise my middle finger at her, but it remained dangling by my side limply.

She tossed my purse onto the sofa. “Let’s go. We don’t have much time before security will be watching the cameras again. Down the back stairs like we talked about.”

He nodded and headed for the door. While there had been no security cameras placed in our booth at our request, I knew there were some in the corridors and I prayed whoever was currently watching the security feed understood what was happening and was calling for help at this very moment.

We didn’t pass a soul on our way out of the club. Harlow led her man for hire out the back way and through the doors normally used for deliveries. She’d timed it perfectly. I knew the day’s deliveries had already arrived, so there wasn’t going to be anyone challenging our departure.

I was right. There was nobody in the large warehouse where vans could park and drop off our goods, but we did have cameras everywhere to ensure nothing got stolen. Since I was still being carried by Harlow’s goon, somebody would work out I was being kidnapped.

Kidnapped. The seriousness of the situation hit me and tears started to well. I couldn’t even raise my hand up to wipe my eyes.

Harlow opened the door, which exited the building, and made sure to close it behind us. The parking lot designated for staff was now in front of us, and she led the way over to a large, nondescript, dark-colored sedan which was parked near the exit gate. She dug a fob out of her pocket and the trunk popped open. “Put her in there.”

She nodded her head toward the trunk and the goon unceremoniously dumped me in. It smelled like something disgusting had been stored inside. The odor made me heave and didn’t help the nausea I was already struggling with.

“Want me to gag her?” It was the first time he’d spoken in my presence and his voice was deep and menacing. Shit. Panic started to burst through me, making my heart race and my eyes widen.

“Nah, don’t bother. She’s not going to be able to scream in a few minutes anyway.” She reached over and shoved me away from the edge so she could slam the lid shut.

It was so dark inside the trunk, the space completely devoid of light. I tried to scream, but no sound came out of my mouth.

Tears started to pour down my cheeks. “Jase.” I could only manage to whisper the name of the man I loved. Did he even know something was wrong? Was he in cell phone range by now? Had Marian been able to get through to him? Had Connor found out anything about Harlow?

Nothing made sense. Had this all been a ploy just to get Jase’s attention? Did Harlow really believe she’d ever have a shot with him?

My head swam and I tried to move my hand to bang on the lid of the trunk, but I couldn’t lift it up. Reality began to sink in, and my despair overwhelmed me.

I heard the engine of the car start, and then it began to move.

It was too late.

Nobody was coming to rescue me.
