They picked up the bags they’d brought with them and asked Marian where they could change. I instructed her to show them to the private bathroom in our office, and they followed her out of the room.

When they reappeared, they’d changed from the tees and jeans they’d been wearing upon arrival into all black from head to toe. They had the laptop case and a bag each, presumably with whatever weapons they’d brought with them inside.

“We’re heading out now. You going to stay here until you hear from us?”

I nodded. “I can’t go home. Not without Emilia.”

“Understood. Hang tight. If we can’t contact you, Jack and Tucker will. We’ll be in communication with them at all times.”

“Thank you. Be safe out there.”

Julian grinned at me. “Safe is our middle name.”

They both left the room, Victoria right behind them. I couldn’t hear the conversation she had with her ex-husband on the other side of the door because she had closed it behind her, but I could see them through the glass wall.

Victoria’s face was fraught with worry, and it was clear Julian was trying to reassure her. Once their conversation appeared to be over, I was surprised when he wrapped his hand around the back of her head and crushed his mouth to hers.

The kiss wasn’t deep or long, but it was full of passion. When he pulled away, he rested his forehead on hers for a few moments before he let her go.

She looked over at Dominic, and he pressed a kiss to her temple before following Julian to the elevator. She waited until they were gone before coming back into the room.

I nodded and looked at Marian and Victoria. “Listen, ladies. I can’t express how much I appreciate you having stayed with me, but you should go home and get some sleep. I’ll call you as soon as I hear something, promise.”

Victoria waved a dismissive hand at me. “I’m not going anywhere.”

“Neither am I, and I should smack you upside the head for suggesting such a thing.” Marian glared at me before her expression softened. “How about I order us something to eat? Starving ourselves won’t help anyone.”

Victoria gave her a smile. “Excellent idea, I’m famished.” I knew she wasn’t just staying to keep me company. She also wanted to make sure her ex-husband and friend also made it back safely.

Marian disappeared to arrange some food, and I sat back in my chair with a long sigh. “And now, we wait.”
