My head hit the concrete and my vision went black as pain swamped my body.

I gasped out, blinking, trying to see. Panic hit. I put my hand up to my head and wetness met my fingers. Was it raining or was I bleeding?

“You fucking bitch.” Barry snarled, grabbing my foot and dragging me along the sidewalk.

“Ow... Barry. Stop!” I tried to sit up but each tug cracked my head back once more.

My vision seemed to be returning but I was shaking now, adrenaline zinging along my veins. I kicked out at him but couldn’t budge his grip on my leg.

He dragged me into the narrow alley next to the restaurant. Dirt ground into my back and darkness intensified due to the buildings crowding above my head.

“You owe me.” He shook my leg before releasing me, then threw his jacket to the ground.

Holy shit. No.

“I’ve got cash at my apartment,” I gasped out. “I’ll pay you back and no one has to know.”

I had to keep him talking. I had to fight. He already had me at a disadvantage, but maybe I could talk him around?

His foot slammed into my belly and I screamed as pain swallowed me up. All the air left my body is an agonized hiss.

I curled up and rolled onto my side, panting for breath. My head was spinning and I’d long stopped panicking. My thoughts had slowed due to pain and shock and I couldn’t formulate a plan of how to get away.

How was I going to survive this?

Barry’s heavy body landed on top of me and I cried out, pushing at him to try and get him off me.

He pinned my flailing arms down with embarrassing ease and rolled me onto my back, making more pain splinter inside my head.

“Get off me!” I screamed again as his hot breath puffed against my face and his sweaty body gyrated against mine.

“Never.” He grunted, grabbing one of my breasts in his rough grasp and squeezing.

A terrifying growl filled the alleyway. I stared up a dark silhouette as someone entered the space. It was a man, a very large man... maybe. I blinked, trying to bring him into focus, groaning in disgust as Barry squeezed my breast yet again. He was so caught up in attacking me, he hadn’t noticed the intruder.

“Help me... please.” I whispered the words, unable to call out properly because of the weight of Barry’s body on top of me.

Hot tears filled my eyes and I gulped as the man stalked forward, reached down to pick Barry up, and threw him with sickening accuracy into the brick wall beside us.

Barry dropped like a bag of shit, unconscious. Judging by the crunching noise when he hit the wall, he had to have broken several bones.

I was whimpering and shaking now.

“I’m here to help you.” The man’s voice was gentle. He scooped me up into his arms and I immediately felt protected.

I closed my eyes and covered my face with my hands, allowing the unfamiliar sensation to wash over me.

Safe.

Then another deep growl sounded and I was suddenly being lowered to the ground once more. What the hell?

I opened my eyes and looked up. And up. The man above me seemed to have grown in size and his feet were no longer feet. They were claw-like. They were... talons.

How was that possible? Was I dreaming? Was this a nightmare?

“Do not be afraid.” His voice had roughened and his words were garbled. “I will fly you to safety.”

Fly?
