His talons reached for me and I froze as one of them scooped me up and held me tightly against the cool scales on his chest.

With a single jump we were soaring up, up and into the air. I began to hyperventilate, fear striking me hard in the chest as my town got further and further away below us.

What in God’s name was happening?

I looked up and that’s when I realized what type of creature held me in its talons.

A dragon. A real motherfucking dragon!

And then the world went dark.

I flapped my wings harder, aiming for height, reaching for my magic to shroud my mate in the warmth she would need to survive the cold we were flying toward. For the first time, I welcomed the rush of magic, knowing I was helping the beautiful woman in my grip to avoid freezing to death.

I wanted her to feel warm and safe and comfortable, and if my magic could bring her a little of that, then for once it was a good thing.

My mate, whose name I still didn’t know, was unconscious now, so I tucked both claws around her and held her as close to my body as I could.

God, she’s amazing. Gorgeous.

With every beat of my heart, the feeling grew stronger within my chest.

She’s the one.

I’d known it the moment I saw her step out of the restaurant. I hadn’t known what to do from my vantage point on the roof terrace of the shop opposite. I was frozen in shock at the sight of her.

My dragon had surged inside of me, demanding I claim my mate. I’d been so distracted trying to control my shifter that I hadn’t noticed the man come up behind her.

When he hit her and dragged her into that alley I jumped off the roof terrace and reached them as soon as I could.

I hope he’s dead,a snarling voice said inside my head.

He’d touched my mate.Hurther. I’d thrown him hard enough. I hoped with every fiber of my being that the one hit against the wall had ended his miserable life.

What sort of man hit a woman who couldn’t defend herself? What sort of man tried to rape a badly injured woman?

A man who didn’t deserve to live.

I flew higher, reaching the Veil that separated my world from hers. I hesitated for just a moment, worried how my mate would feel about me taking her away from everything she’d ever known.

But she was injured, and my mother’s magic could heal.

My dragon fought my humanity back, knowing that we would be able to make her happy. Somehow we would make it right. Because now that I had her, I would never let her go.

I flew through the Veil and the cold hit hard.

I pushed more of my magic down through my claws to protect my mate from the snow as I flew, catching the wind currents so that I conserved my energy where I could.

The Black Mountains were in sight. My home. And now, hopefully it would be my mate’s home, too.

I flew lower, pushing myself to fly to the top level of my parents’ castle, where I would be seen by fewer people than if I landed on a lower level.

I maneuvered my hold on my mate and managed to land on the icy balcony on one leg. I shifted back quickly, catching my mate in my arms and rushing to the door.

It immediately opened for me, my mom on the other side of the glass. “Come in, come in. I’ve prepared the bed for her.”
