The top floor of the castle was the wing that Mom once lived in, when she was the widow of King Magnik. When she married my father she moved into the royal chambers.

I didn’t ask questions. My mother always knew everything. So I simply followed her to the small room where she’d once lived and placed my mate on the clean sheets.

Mom pulled the blankets up and over her. “She’s hurt.”

I nodded, my teeth tightly clenched together as anger filled my heart.

Mom continued, “But not as badly as in the vision. You saved her?”

I nodded once more and managed to say, “I think so.”

She gestured to the door. “Go have a quick shower and get dressed. I’ll stay with her.”

“Should I fetch a doctor?” I asked, already moving toward the door.

Mom shook her head and lifted her hands. White magic glowed in her palms. “No. I can heal these injuries. Go get ready. Your mate will be awake soon.”

I took one more lingering look at my mate, her eyes still closed, then I ran to my bedroom two flights down and into my shower to wash away the stink of anger and blood.

My mate would be awake soon and I wanted to be by her side when she did.

Chapter 6

CHARITY

I jerked awake, then relaxed into a strange sort of lethargy, almost like I’d been drugged and couldn’t open my eyes. But I wasn’t drugged, and I was so comfortable. In a bed with expensive sheets and a soft mattress, and the most luxurious pillows cushioning my head.

But... why was I in a bed that wasn’t mine?

My eyes popped open and I glanced around, not moving any other part of my body. Above my head was a bed frame I didn’t recognize, with an ornate ceiling and a light fitting that looked like it was from a historical movie set.

I tried to sit up but my stomach hurt and I moved my hand to cover the pain. “Ow.”

“Try not to move,” a soft female voice said. “I’ve done what I could to heal you, but as you’re human, you’ll need to do a lot of the mending yourself.”

I twisted to see a woman sitting calmly beside my bed. She was beautiful, and very regal-looking. With her long velvet dress and her hair pinned up she looked like a medieval princess.
