Marienne grinned again. “Secrets always come out in the end, just so both of you know that.”

She began walking toward the door. “It’s late, so I’m going to bed. My husband will be wondering where I am.”

Anthony snorted. “Dad will be snoring his head off.”

She smiled softly again. “Fine... I’m exhausted. I’m old. Let me get some sleep.”

She waved at me just before she pulled the door shut. “Nice to have you staying with us, Charity.”

“Oh, nice of you to have me,” I responded as she shut the door, leaving me alone with Mr. Sexy-ass-dream-guy himself.

“Um...” I glanced around the room. “Where exactly am I?”

Why hadn’t he taken me to a hospital, or the police or something? “And what happened to Barry? Did you call the police?”

Anthony walked around the bed so he was standing at the foot of my bed and we could look at each other easier, with a little breathing room. “Um... don’t you want to get some sleep? It’s after one a.m.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “Why aren’t you answering my questions?”

Part of me argued that I should be feeling afraid, but instead I rationalized that if they’d wanted to hurt me, I wouldn’t be lying in a plush bed, comfortable and healing.

He ran a hand through his hair, then looked at me with eyes that shone with heat. “Because I’m afraid to tell you.”

“Tell me what?” I whispered, and even though my pulse quickened, there was no fear in my heart.

He gestured to the bed. “Where you are. What I am.”

“Whatyou are...” As though the words conjured the images, more memories flashed through my mind.

Memories of a dragon, picking me up and holding me. Carrying me away. Flying...

“No...” I whispered. “It can’t be true. It isn’t possible.” He couldn’t be some sort of dragon prince in another world like the one I dreamed about every night.

“What can’t be true?” he asked, his eyes flashing with the purple mist I’d seen too many times to count... in my dreams.

My belly clenched with longing at the sight.

I forced myself to pretend calm as I said, “Please just tell me the truth. Where am I? Who are you? And... yes.Whatare you?”

My heart was beating erratically now, but I wouldn’t run. I needed to know the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Anthony sighed heavily. “Mom was right, the truth always comes out, doesn’t it?”

He was trying to be lighthearted but my nerves were stretched tight and all I could manage was a nod. “Please.”

He grabbed the bed end and leaned forward, seeming to brace himself for what he needed to say. “My name is Anthony, and I’m a prince. The second born son of the King and Queen of the Black Mountains. I brought you here to our castle. My home. Because I knew my mother could heal you.”

Holy shit...

Then Anthony continued, and blew my world apart with his declaration.

“And I’m a dragon shifter; we all are. Well, my mother isn’t. She’s... well, she doesn’t shift, but pretty much everyone else does around here.”

I inhaled sharply, struggling not to laugh hysterically. “Um... say what?”
