My stomach grumbled as if on cue. “That would be great.”

The robe was soft and warm, with thick fur around the collar. “I think I’m taking this home. It’s great.”

Cass laughed. “Please do. Now, dinner.”

Cass and I joined her husband, King Damon, at the dining table in their small family eating room.

“Anthony! This is a surprise. How are you?” Damon stood up to extend his arm and shake my hand.

“Thanks for having me on, well... no notice at all.” I sat down and slid the chair in, my gaze landing on a beautiful fare of roasted vegetables and steaming hot pies. “This looks amazing.”

“Eat, please. I know how flying creates hunger. Then tell us how we can help you... unless I missed something and you’ve already told Cass everything?”

Cass reached for one of the pies and slid it onto her plate. “He had a fight with his mom, which I can imagine would happen on occasion. Marienne is a fiery one.”

Damon snorted. “She isn’t the only one.”

“Oh hush,” Cass said, glaring at her husband. “You have to put up with me. We’re fated. Remember?”

“Like I could forget,” Damon said, reaching for his wife’s hand and lifting it to his lips to kiss her knuckles.

It wasn’t quite as bad as watching my parents kiss and touch each other, but it was close. I focused on my food, shoveling roasted pumpkin and potato into my mouth. Of the five kingdoms in our realm, my family was friendly with two of them, led by King Erik and King Damon.

All three kingdoms had kings and queens who were fated mates. Meant to be, in every way.

“Funny how people used to think that fated mates were rare,” I said, breaking the silence and grabbing a pie as well.

Damon chuckled. “Well, I certainly never thought I’d find mine.”

“We were both very lucky,” Cass said, smiling brightly.

The happy atmosphere was broken by a slamming door behind me and heavy footsteps on the floor boards.

I jumped up and turned, my dragon shifter leaping to the forefront. But it wasn’t a threat entering the room, but the dragon daughter herself, ablaze with fire.

“Hi Veronica.” I grinned at the girl I’d always considered akin to a little sister.

Her frown lifted when she saw me. “Anthony! I didn’t know you were here.” She rushed forward for a hug, whatever tantrum she’d planned fizzling out, at least temporarily.

“It wasn’t planned; I just started flying and found myself here.”

She pulled back, her hands sliding down my arms to grip my fingers. “You know it’s always good to see you.”

A vision hit me out of nowhere, like a lightning bolt thrown directly into my brain.

Veronica stood by a window, beautiful in a gown of royal purple. She was heavily pregnant and smiling, obviously happy.

But where was she? I recognized the windows of the castle but couldn’t place the location.

Her hand rested on her belly, cradling her babe as she turned toward the sound of footsteps echoing in the room.

I knew instinctively that the man I’d see next was fated for her. I turned to look, unable to resist.

A familiar face stepped out of the shadows, his smile a testament to the love he felt for her.

Veronica pulled away, disconnecting our hands and halting my vision.

“What the hell was that?” She yelled at me.
